SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Continuing their dominance in non-conference action, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (6-0-2) remained unbeaten on Thursday evening with a thrilling 2-1 victory on the road at Sacramento State (5-2-2).
Notably, this victory marked USF's first win in Sacramento since a 1-0 victory in 1998.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Coming into the match as two of the top teams in the region, the Dons and Hornets were strong on defense to begin play as USF recorded only three shots in total in the first half, with Andri Jonasson's shot in the second minute of the game as the lone shot on goal for the Dons in the first 45 minutes of action. With neither team able to find much momentum offensively, the match remained scoreless heading into the locker room.
- Out of the halftime break, USF continued to apply pressure on Sacramento State. In the 53rd minute, Dominic Valdivia delivered his third assist of the season to Max Chretien, who then punched home his second goal of the year to give USF the 1-0 lead.
- Just over ten minutes later, Chretien found the back of the net for the second time in the match on an assist from Max Hamelink at 63:31. Recording his first brace of the campaign, Chretien's goal doubled up the Hornets midway through the second half.
- Responding down the stretch, Sacramento State got on the board on a penalty kick goal from Michael Gonzalez in the 83rd minute.
- Showing his elite skill in the cage, goalkeeper Eric Waltz denied the Hornet attack in the final minutes of the match, including a highlight-reel save on a shot from Gonzalez with 14 seconds remaining on the game clock. Following this stellar defensive effort, USF held on to secure the 2-1 victory and record their first win on the road in Sacramento since 1998.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Spreading the wealth so far, Chretien became the fifth Don (Valdivia, Hamelink, Jonasson, Arjan Dosanjh) to score at least three goals this fall with his two-goal effort against the Hornets.
- As a team, USF outshout Sacramento State 12-10, including a 9-8 edge on shots on goal. For Waltz, the junior tallied at least three saves for the seventh time this year.
- For Valdivia, the Santa Monica native has made an impact all over the field as he now leads the team with 9 total points in 2022. Overall, his 24 total shots also rank second in the WCC.
POSTGAME WITH THE DONS:
Head Coach Chris Brown- "It was a great team win tonight. Sacramento State is a very good team that had a lot of momentum coming into this game and I thought we did a good job controlling the game from the opening kick.
Max Chretien showed his character tonight scoring 2 great goals after being out injured the last couple of weeks.
Eric Waltz came up massive at the end of the game with a world class save. Players are making plays and the team is doing a great job competing every second of the game. We look forward to finishing up or non-conference schedule on Sunday against a tough Air Force team. We will be celebrating our service men and women and we hope to see everyone out there. Some of the players from the 1966 Dons National Championship team will be there with their former captain Lou Sagastume who was the long-time head coach at Air Force."
UP NEXT:
USF will return home to the Hilltop to close out non-conference play as the Dons will host Air Force this Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 pm at Negoesco Stadium. Notably, Sunday's match will also be the inaugural First Responders Appreciation Day game as USF Athletics will honor first responders from around the Bay Area throughout the afternoon. Live streaming, live statistics and tickets are available via the
team's schedule page.
