Broncos Hold Off Dons in Hard-Fought Battle

BOISE, Idaho - Coming down to the wire in their first road game of the year, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (2-1) fell at Boise State (2-0), 63-58, in a hard-fought matchup on Sunday afternoon at ExtraMile Arena.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Battling on the defensive end to start things out, San Francisco got on the board at 16:46 in the first half on a three-pointer from Isaiah Hawthorne.
  • With the Broncos finding the bottom of the net in the minutes to follow, the Dons stayed on the heels of BSU as triples from Ndewedo Newbury and Marcus Williams kept it a one-point game, 12-11, after the first six plus minutes of action.
  • As the midway point of the first half passed, Boise State had stretched their advantage to six (17-11), but back-to-back baskets from Mike Sharavjamts and Williams helped USF remain within two, 17-15, at 9:52.
  • Defending their home court, the Broncos used a 9-2 run to jump in front by nine shortly thereafter, 26-17, with 6:07 remaining in the half.
  • Staying within striking distance, a made free throw from Sharavjamts kept the Dons within six, 30-24, at the 3:05 mark. Riding the momentum of their fan base, Boise State responded by closing the half with a pair of free throws of their own to hold an eight-point lead, 32-24, at the halftime break.
  • Coming out of the locker room, consecutive baskets from Hawthorne and Jonathan Mogbo brought the Dons back within four, 32-28.
  • After responding with two triples to push their lead to ten, 38-28, at 18:16, San Francisco answered the call by reeling off an 8-0 run of their own. Using the strength of a three-point play from Hawthorne, USF trailed by just two once again, 38-36, at the 15:25 mark.
  • Matching each other blow-for-blow, the Broncos remained in front as the midway point of the second half approached, but Boise State never grew their lead larger than five during the stretch.
  • After a jumper in the paint from Mogbo cut it to a three-point game, 50-47, Boise State found momentum as they went on a 9-3 run to extend the gap to nine, 59-50, with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Fighting until the final whistle, San Francisco closed the gap to five once again, 61-55, after Newbury converted both free throws of a one-and-one at 2:28.
  • Digging deep when it mattered most, Boise State held off a final run from the Dons as the Broncos forced a few turnovers by USF to wrap up the afternoon. Hanging on for their second win of the year, Boise State took down San Francisco by a final score of 63-58.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • As a unit, four Dons finished in double figures for the third straight game: Sharavjamts (13 points), Newbury (11 points), Mogbo (10 points) and Hawthorne (10 points).
  • Individually, Mogbo recorded a new season-high with nine rebounds while Newbury tied his season and career-high with three blocks.
  • Overall, San Francisco led Boise State in points in the paint (38-32) and points off turnovers (14-5).
