Baseball Drops Series Opener to San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Beginning another weekend conference series away from home, the USF Dons baseball team (14-19, 5-11) came up short by a 17-3 final score to the San Diego Toreros (16-19-1, 9-7) on Friday evening from Fowler Park.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Diego got off to a fast start in the series opener as they scored nine runs in their half of the first inning.
  • Wasting little time to respond, Christian Stapleton recorded a one out single and came around to score on Mattie Thomas' first base knock of the season on a single up the middle to make it 9-1. Tyler Martinez would come through as well with a single up the middle that scored Patrick Keighran that brought the Dons back within seven.
  • USD would go on to add three more runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 13-2.
  • Ready to answer back, the Dons scored their third and final run of the night when T. Martinez led off the inning with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a Mario DeMera sacrifice fly to center field making it 13-3.
  • The Toreros would score four more runs in the bottom of the seventh as they went on to secure the 17-3 win in the series opener.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Hitting in the nine hole on Friday night, T. Martinez had a big evening serving as the team's left fielder going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.
  • Stapleton put together a multi-hit night going 2-for-4 with a run scored against San Diego.
  • Harris Williams III was able to produce some positive results for the Dons as well going 2-for-4 against the Toreros in the series opener.
