Cougars Handle Dons in Game One

PROVO, Utah - Beginning their final regular season series against BYU (10-18, 4-6 WCC) as members of the West Coast Conference, the University of San Francisco baseball team (12-12, 3-7 WCC) dropped game one, 6-2, of their series against the Cougars on Friday night at Miller Park.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting things started, Tyler Martinez singled into left field for the game's first hit in the top of the first inning, but the Cougars got on the board with four runs on three hits in the home half of the frame, which included a three-run home run by Jacob Wilk, to take an earl 4-0 lead.
  • Although Christian Stapleton would get on with a single of his own in the second, USF did not get in the run column until a solo home run off the bat of Patrick Keighran in the top of the third as the Dons drew closer, 4-1.
  • After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings from both sides, the green and gold continued to chop away in the top of the sixth as T. Martinez tripled down the right field line before Michael Campagna singled him home to make it 4-2 in favor of BYU.
  • One inning later, the Cougars responded with two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-2, which came courtesy of a two-run home run by Ryan Sepede.
  • Reaching base for the third time in the top of the eighth, T. Martinez helped the Dons pose a threat late, but USF would be unable to cash in. Moving into the ninth, Campagna reached first on a hit by pitch, but the Cougars ultimately closed the door on a late rally from the Dons as BYU held on to take game one in Provo, 6-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Setting the table at the top of the lineup, T. Martinez notched his fifth two-hit performance of the season as he finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
  • Notably, Campagna (13 games) and Mario DeMera (14 games) each reached base on Friday night to extend their respective on-base streaks.
  • Out of the bullpen, Matt McConnell tossed his sixth scoreless appearance of the season while freshman Gabriel Barrett logged his fifth overall and third straight scoreless appearance.
