Anderson Earns All-American Honors, Dons Finish in Top 20

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Competing on the biggest stage in college golf, the University of San Francisco men's golf team finished as a top 20 team in the country at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale over Memorial Day weekend. Notably, graduate student Matthew Anderson finished as the top individual from a non-advancing team as he tied for eleventh overall to earn All-American status (top 15 individuals).

TOURNAMENT RESULTS:
  • Back in Scottsdale for the second time in three years, USF got off to a strong start as the Dons were tied for ninth as a team at 5-over (285) following the first 18 holes. Continuing his hot play, Matthew Anderson was tied for sixth individually after firing a 68 (-2) across his first round.
  • Heading into round two, the Dons fell to a tie for 17th as a team after shooting 294 (+14) on Saturday. Staying steady, Anderson remained in the top ten as he was tied for eighth at 1-under-139 (68/71) after recording a 71 on day two.
  • Moving into Sunday, the green and gold were just three strokes behind the cut line (+19) as they trailed conference foe Brigham Young. Similar to round two, USF would fire a 294 as a team to close their three rounds as they finished 20th overall at 33-over-873 (285, 294,294).

  • Remaining amongst the tournament's best, Anderson was tied for 13th overall at the end of three rounds as he sat at 1-under-209 (68,71,70). As one of the top nine individuals from a non-advancing team (top 15 teams advanced to match play), the graduate student advanced to Monday's final round of stroke play as he aimed to finish as an All-American (top 15 individuals).
  • Suiting up for his final round as a Don on Monday, Anderson fired a 71 (+1) across his final round on Monday as he battled Drew Goodman of Oklahoma and Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech, the world's No. 1 amateur men's golfer, until the final hole. Notably, the Canadian finished even-par (68,71,70,71/280) throughout his four rounds at Grayhawk. With these efforts, Anderson finished as the top individual from a non-advancing team as he also earned All-American honors after finishing in the top 15 individuals overall. At the end of stroke play, he also tied the fourth-best scoring average on Par 4's (-1) in addition to tying for the sixth-most birdies (16) in the field.
