SAN JOSE, Calif. - Hitting the road for the first time this fall, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (2-0-1) drew a tie at San Jose State (1-0-2) on Thursday evening as the Dons and Spartans were even at 1-1 after a hard-fought 90 minutes at Spartan Soccer Complex.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Getting the offense started early, Karl Josefsson fired the first shot of the match for either side just 1:03 into the contest, but was denied by Spartan goalkeeper David Sweeney as the game remained scoreless to start.
- As the opening minutes of the match unfolded, the two teams traded shots, but the Spartans got on the scoreboard first in the 28th minute after reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week Angel Iniguez put home a goal following a ricochet off a save by Eric Waltz.
- Although the Dons would record six shots in the first half, San Jose State held steady and maintained their 1-0 advantage heading into the locker room.
- Coming out of the break, San Francisco attacked early as TJ Knight fired a shot of his own at 50:35 before the green and gold were presented with a corner kick at 50:50. Just a few seconds later, Gabriel Bracken Serra delivered a beauty of a ball into the box, where Arjan Dosanjh then controlled the ball and sent it past the SJSU keeper to even things up at 1-1.
- Down the stretch, San Francisco continued to pound the ball offensively as the Dons went on to outshoot the Spartans 20-1 in the second half. Dominating the ball for most of the half, USF could not find the go-ahead goal they needed to pull in front.
- Following two final attempts from Matthew Duggan and Olivier Sylvain in the final minute of play, the match resulted in a 1-1 draw.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Registering a new career-high, Sylvain tallied nine total shots against the Spartans on top of playing a full 90 minutes.
- In the cage, Waltz, who transferred to the Hilltop from San Jose State prior to the 2022 season, tallied a new season-high six saves in the contest.
- Overall, eleven different Dons tallied at least one shot on Thursday, with Sylvain leading the charge for San Francisco.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH BROWN:
"Tonight was a good college soccer game. We had a dominant second half and should have put away more goals. Credit to their keeper and defense as they made some big plays towards the end of the game. I was pleased with our second half, but we have to be cleaner in the first. We will get better as we prepare for a good Riverside team on Sunday."
