SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Entering their second year of a unique partnership, the University of San Francisco men's golf program is set to co-host the Howard/USF Intercollegiate on Monday, Sept. 18 and Tuesday, Sept. 19 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Â
Last year, San Francisco partnered with Howard University to begin a tournament that is focused on equity and inclusion within the sport of golf. Collegiately, this tournament gives unheralded programs the opportunity to compete at prestigious venues such as TPC Harding Park and TPC Potomac, last year's course.
Â
"We have partnered with unbelievable sponsors in AWS and PNC Bank that are providing the college experience on two championship golf courses for no cost to any of the student-athletes, which is unheard of in this day of college golf," said San Francisco head coach
Jack Kennedy.
Â
Having hosted a numerous events including the 2020 PGA Championship, this year's tournament at Harding Park will feature 13 teams, including three HBCU's: Howard, Alabama State and Prairie View A&M. In addition to San Francisco, three other schools from Northern California -Â Pacific, Santa Clara, UC Davis -Â will also be competing in this year's event.
Â
"The tournament that we have created, which alternates coasts, has truly been amazing," said Howard head coach Sam Puryear. "It has given us a diverse field, allowed us to impact the local communities through verbiage and clinics and has matched universities together that otherwise would have not ever met."
Â
In addition to the collegiate tournament, Howard + San Francisco also are partnering with First Tee of San Francisco and ACE Kids Golf of Oakland to provide a youth clinic to young individuals in the area who have not previously had access to the game of golf. Beginning at 9:30 am on Sunday, Sept. 17, the clinic will run for an hour and a half as local youth will work with student-athletes and staff on their skills around the course.
Â
"The youth clinic is just as if not more important to the initiative that we are trying to do with this event than the collegiate tournament itself," said Kennedy. "That being said, we are also providing an elite level collegiate tournament on two championship-level golf courses under the TPC umbrella."
Â
Notably, local superstar and four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors also has ties to the events. Back in 2019, the two-time NBA MVP donated an approximate $6 million to resurrect the men's and women's golf programs at Howard. Since making their return, which included their debut at the Division I level, the men's team has won the PGA Works Collegiate Championship twice, essentially the national championship for HBCU's and other minority-serving institutions. On the women's side, the Bison finished third in the same tournament.
Â
Beyond this initial donation, Curry hosted a fundraised event for Howard golf this summer in Pebble Beach. Aside from Howard, Curry also created his Underrated Tour, which provides opportunities for junior golfers around the country.
Â
The 2023 Howard/USF Intercollegiate will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 am on Monday, with rounds one and two set for the first day of action. Teams will then wrap up play with their final 18 holes on Tuesday with split tee teams beginning at 8:00 am. Fans are welcome and encouraged to attend both days of the event.
Â
Live scoring of the tournament will be available viaÂ
Golfstat and theÂ
team's schedule page.
