Dons Keep Rolling, Tame Lions on Thursday Night

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Fending off another conference opponent to pick up their seventh consecutive victory, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (15-4, 4-0 WCC) continued to roll on Thursday night as the Dons defeated LMU (8-10, 1-3 WCC), 90-74, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Getting off to a good start through the first two minutes of action, San Francisco scored the first six points of the contest as a dunk from Jonathan Mogbo at 18:15 gave the Dons an early 6-0 advantage.
  • Cutting their deficit in half on a pair of free throws from Dominick Harris at 16:37, LMU trailed by four, 8-4, but USF stretched their lead back up to seven, 13-6, on back-to-back field goals, which included a three-pointer from Mike Sharavjamts and another dunk from Mogbo.
  • Answering back shortly thereafter, Harris kept the Lions on the heels of the Dons, 17-14, with a fastbreak jumper at 12:24. Punching back once more, the green and gold used an 8-0 run in the minutes to follow to push their advantage to double digits, 25-14, as the midway mark of the first half crossed.
  • With 8:28 on the clock, Will Johnston sank a triple for LMU to make it a six-point game, 25-19, but this was as close as the Lions would get for the remainder of the half.
  • Finding his groove as time went on, Marcus Williams converted on a jumper of his own at 4:41 to put the Dons up by fifteen, 39-24. Capping off the first half in style, Ryan Beasley took the ball up three quarters of the court with just a few seconds left on the clock before pulling up and draining a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give San Francisco a 46-34 lead heading into the break.
  • Coming out of the locker room, LMU execeuted their plan of attack as the Lions scored seven of the first nine points to begin the second half and come back within seven, 48-41, after free throws from Alex Merkviladze at 17:04.
  • Exchanging baskets as the game continued, neither side made a significant run in the following minutes. With just under ten minutes remaining in regulation, a layup from Mogbo spurred an 8-2 run for the green and gold as USF found more breathing room by making it 73-55 after a jumper from Malik Thomas at the 7:30 mark.
  • Fighting with each possession, LMU did not lose faith down the stretch as another three courtesy of Johnston brought the Lions within nine, 83-74, with 2:20 left on the game clock.
  • Closing out the night with two dunks and Williams' fourth three-pointer of the night, San Francisco also scored the last six points of the ballgame as the Dons went on to secure the 90-74 victory over LMU.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Logging his tenth double-double of the season, Mogbo was named Player of the Game after finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals in 33 total minutes. • Enjoying success offensively, Williams finished with 24 points, his second most in a game this season, to go along with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal in 33 minutes played. Overall, the guard shot 10-of-16 from the floor, including an impressive 4-of-5 from beyond-the-arc.
  • Alongside Mogbo and Williams, Thomas (13 points) finished in double figures for the ninth straight game and tenth time this season. Overall, San Francisco is now 7-0 since Thomas entered the starting lineup.
  • Playing efficiently during his time on the hardwood, Sharavjamts poured in 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with 7 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Getting stronger with the ball, tonight marked the ninth game in double figures for the sophomore this season as he also tied his season-high in assists while committing zero turnovers.
  • As a team, San Francisco led LMU in points in the paint (52-22), points off turnovers (14-2), second chance points (11-10) and fast break points (13-9).
