Dons Fall to Beavers in Back-and-Forth Battle

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In a tightly contested match, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (11-6, 4-1 WCC) fought through five sets, but ultimately fell to Oregon State (4-11, 2-3 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco and Oregon State went back and forth in the first set, with nine ties in the initial frame. San Francisco held an early 8-6 lead, with two quick kills coming from Michalina Rola.
  • Oregon State fought to claim a two-point advantage of its own, building a 17-15 lead, before a service ace by Shannon Sheehy and an error from the Beavers knotted the set at 18-apiece.
  • The green and gold were pushed to the brink, down 24-21 following a kill by Annika Hester, but kills from Aylen Ayub and Hayden Goodman, along with two OSU errors, put the Dons ahead, 25-24.
  • An error from the Dons evened the match at 25-25, but USF took care of business through a Maria Petkova kill and a Beavers error to take the first set, 27-25.
  • The second frame started similarly, as the score was tied at 10 early on, with two kills and a service ace coming from Rola.
  • San Francisco kept it competitive, but a 16-8 scoring run by Oregon State, including three kills from Kalli Schoening, lifted the Beavers over the Dons for a 25-18 victory in the second set.
  • Building off their momentum, the Beavers opened up the third frame with a 7-3 advantage, with four early kills from Alexis Rodriguez. Quickly fighting back, USF recorded four straight points to even up the set at seven, courtesy of a Delaney Ewing kill and three OSU errors.
  • Regaining the advantage, Oregon State rebuilt a four-point lead at 16-12, but three kills by Maria Petkova paved the way for the green and gold to narrow the deficit to one, 20-19. However, the Beavers quickly got that four-point advantage back, with set point at 24-20. Despite two Aylen Ayub kills and an error to cut the deficit to 24-23, a costly Dons service error gave the Beavers a 25-23 third-set win.
  • Opening up the fourth set, Michalina Rola wasted no time to put the Dons ahead, with two kills and two aces early on to give the green and gold a 4-1 lead.
  • Oregon State evened up the contest at six, but a 5-0 scoring run by the green and gold, with two kills each from Crystal Galaviz and Lindsay Oldendorf, gave USF a five-point, 11-6 advantage.
  • The Beavers clawed their way to tie up the frame at 19, but a Jolei Akima ace and two Hayden Goodman kills helped push the Dons to a 25-22 fourth-set win, forcing a fifth and final frame.
  • Beginning the final set, four OSU errors and kills from Rola and Goodman gave San Francisco a 6-3 advantage in the first-to-15 final frame. Battling back, the Beavers strung together a 7-2 scoring run, courtesy of two Lauren Rumel kills, to take a 10-8 lead.
  • USF followed suit with kills from Petkova, Ayub, and Rola to take a 13-12 advantage, but a kill from Hester, a green and gold error, and an ace by Iris Coba were the Dons undoing as Oregon State captured a 15-13 fifth set victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leading the attack for the Dons, Rola, Petkova, and Goodman each tallied double-digit kills in the match, with Rola atop the stat sheet with 15 kills, and Petkova and Goodman not far behind with 14 apiece.
  • Posting seven kills, Ayub led both teams with a .700 hitting and kill percentage, along with totaling a game-high 46 assists, her highest assist total in conference play.
  • Defensively, Goodman tallied a match-high five block assists, with the Dons totaling nine blocks in the match.
  • Rola additionally tied a season-high three service aces in the match, having last recorded three aces against UTRGV on September 13.
  • As a team, San Francisco hit over .300 in a match for the seventh time this season and the third time in conference play, posting a .331 hit percentage. The green and gold also tallied 58 assists, the most by the Dons since September 6 vs. CSUN, and tied for the fourth-most single-game assists by a WCC team in conference play.
