Beason, Easley Lead Dons in Comeback Victory

SPOKANE, Wash. - Showing resiliency on the road, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (3-5-2, 2-0 WCC) completed a thrilling comeback in Spokane on Wednesday night as the Dons scored two second half goals to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Gonzaga (6-5-2, 0-3 WCC), 3-2, at Luger Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Scoring the fastest goal of the season for San Francisco, Chris Maldonado opened the match by finding the back of the net just 49 seconds into play as the junior gave the Dons an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the minutes to follow, the green and gold continued to press offensively as Isaiah Easley and Gabriel Bracken Serra each recorded shots on target. At 7:56, Bracken Serra narrowly missed as he struck the left post of the opposing goal.
  • Drawing even shortly thereafter, Gonzaga responded with their first goal of the evening as Ian Silva found Ben Augee at 15:19 to level the score at 1-1.
  • Keeping their foot on the gas, Adrian Medina, Easley and Brayden Beason each tallied shots in order as the half played on, but the Bulldogs grabbed the lead, 2-1, on a goal from Damoni McKenna-Greenwalt at 33:29.
  • With San Francisco going on to outshoot GU 12-4 in the opening 45 minutes, Junhwan Park, Bracken Serra and Medina kept firing as halftime approached, but none were able to find the equalizer needed before the break. Heading into the locker room, Gonzaga maintained their 2-1 advantage.
  • Coming out of halftime, Reid Roberts got in on the action as he fired a shot on frame at 57:21, but was unlucky in his attempt.
  • After Beason recorded another shot on target at 67:51, the freshman delivered in a big way for the Dons as he punched home a pass from Isaiah Easley at 74:08 to knot the match at 2-2.
  • Digging deep down the stretch, David Raphael launched a perfect pass to the streaking Beason in the closing minutes of the contest as the forward danced through the Bulldog defense to find Easley near the goal. Coming up clutch, Easley rocketed home his third goal in as many games to put the green and gold in front, 3-2, at 87:57.
  • Ultimately, this goal would prove to be the game winner for San Francisco as the Dons held steady in the final 2:02 to secure the comeback victory over Gonzaga, 3-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Playing a career-high 61 minutes in Spokane, Beason was named Player of the Game after also finishing with a career-high three points, which came on the strength of one goal and one assist. Additionally, his four shots also marked a career-high while his three shots on goal tied for a game-high with Easley.

  • As a team, San Francisco outshot Gonzaga19-6, including a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. So far this season, the Dons have outshot their opponents in nine of their ten matches.
POSTGAME WITH COACH BROWN:
"Great team win tonight on the road against a tough team. We have been playing good soccer and it showed the majority of the game. We went down a goal heading into the second half and showed our resiliency and quality to win the game in the last 15 minutes. We had a lot of players step up tonight. We look forward to getting back to the City and taking on Portland on Sunday."
