Riley IV Shines Again as Dons Throttle Cougars

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Closing out a season-opening four-game homestand, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (4-0) remained perfect to start the campaign as the Dons routed Chicago State (0-4), 82-37, on Saturday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco opened with the first seven points of the contest, including five quick points from Tyrone Riley IV, to take a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game.
  • On the other end, Noble Crawford had the first five points for the Cougars, putting the score at 10-5 at 16:56.
  • Taking control of the game, threes from Riley IV and Ndewedo Newbury contributed to a 10-0 Dons run to put the green and gold up 15 heading into the first media timeout of the half.
  • Jalen Forrest hit a three for Chicago State with just under eight minutes to play, but that would be the last basket of the half for the Cougars as USF shut out Chicago State in the final 7:55. Notably, the Dons strung together a 17-0 run to end the period, including a personal 7-0 spurt from Riley IV, as San Francisco headed into the break with a 44-12 lead.
  • Chicago State began the second half of play with a 7-2 burst, but it was quickly snuffed by a 10-2 USF run, which included threes from Marcus Williams and Ryan Beasley, to give the Dons a 56-21 advantage at 11:46.
  • Threes from Quincy Allen and Matthew Robinson followed by an and-one from Troy Mckoy Jr. put the score at 58-30 with 10 minutes remaining, but the green and gold quickly rebuilt the lead with 12 unanswered points. During the stretch, Riley IV cashed in on two more threes to balloon the gap to 40 points as the Dons led 70-30 with 6:39 to play.
  • San Francisco kept its foot on the gas to wrap up the contest as the green and gold cruised to take home the final game of the homestand, 82-37.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • With the best performance of his young career, Riley IV poured in a career-best 28 points on 9-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-6 from downtown. Additionally, the guard added three rebounds and three steals in just 23 minutes of action. Notably, the freshman outscored Chicago State in the first half by himself, 20-12.
  • Newbury and Ryan Beasley each scored 10 points tonight as both cashed in on two three-pointers apiece. For Beasley, the sophomore also totaled two steals in a season-high 28 minutes of action.
  • Nearing a double-double, Williams totaled nine points while tying his career-high with eight rebounds to go along with five assists and two steals in 27 total minutes.
  • Off the bench, James O'Donnell scored a season-high eight points on 4-of-6 shooting as the freshman also grabbed four rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
