Dons Fall to Rams in Season Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (0-1) opened the 2024-25 season on the road, falling to Colorado State (1-0) 52-47 Monday evening at Moby Arena.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • In a low-scoring first quarter, San Francisco opened the game on a 5-1 scoring run as Freja Werth converted on a three-point play, and Debora dos Santos registered a putback layup to give the Dons an early advantage.
  • The Dons' lead ballooned to five at the 5:06 mark of the quarter after Emma Trawally Porta connected on a three-point basket to extend the advantage to 8-3.
  • Colorado State answered in the back half of the quarter and closed with six straight points, capped with an Emma Ronsiek free throw to give the Rams a 9-8 lead at the end of the opening 10 minutes.
  • Lorena Barbosa helped the Dons regain the lead in the first possession of the second half, connecting on a long three-point attempt at 9:45 to give the green and gold an 11-9 edge.
  • The Dons continued to hold the momentum at the start of the quarter, following Barbosa's basket with five straight points to push the lead to 16-9 at the 7:39 mark.
  • The Rams began to chip away at the deficit shortly after, trimming the Dons' lead to two, 20-18, following a Hannah Ronsiek three-pointer at 3:29.
  • Both programs continued to trade baskets in the final minutes of the half, but San Francisco held a five-point advantage at the halftime break, 27-22 after Trawally Porta knocked down two free throws with 34 seconds left.
  • A three-minute scoring drought ensued at the start of the second half as both teams combined for four missed shots and two turnovers.
  • San Francisco opened the scoring in the third quarter on a Werth mid-range baseline jumper to add to the lead to 29-22 at 7:55.
  • The Dons continued to score and recorded the game's first double-digit advantage at the 4:57 quarter mark after Angeliki Ziaka posted back-to-back three-pointers, her first-career collegiate points, to give the green and gold a 37-25 lead.
  • Colorado State held San Francisco scoreless in the final minutes of the third and used a 6-0 scoring run to trim the deficit to six, 37-31 heading into the final quarter of play.
  • The Rams dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dons, 21-10, to secure the five-point victory. Trailing 46-43 late in the quarter, a Trawally Porta hook shot cut the deficit to one, 46-45, but a 6-2 Rams run foiled the Dons' comeback efforts.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Werth led San Francisco throughout the game, scoring a team-high 13 points while nearly reaching a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • Tying Werth in rebounds with nine, dos Santos added eight points on 66.6 percent (four-for-six)) shooting.
  • In her first game as a Don, Trawally Porta added nine points and grabbed two rebounds in 19 minutes of work.
