Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting Leads Dons Past Wolf Pack in Series Finale

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (4-3) earned a bounce-back win, defeating Nevada (4-2) 7-2 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a couple of runs to gain a 2-0 advantage.
  • Two of the first three batters for the Dons reached base as Logan Schweizer led off the inning with an infield single. Lane Oliphant later lined a double down the left-field line to give the Dons two runners in scoring position with one out. Logan Azem followed with a two-RBI double over the third-base bag, plating Schweizer and Oliphant.
  • The Wolf Pack responded in the third inning, trimming their deficit in half, 2-1, when Nolan Wilson ripped a long single to right-center field, scoring JR Freethy from second base.
  • The Dons increased the advantage in the bottom half of the third, scoring two runs to push the lead to 4-1.
  • AJ Guiliana led off the inning with a double and quickly scored on a Zack Ramppen RBI knock to center field. After Schweizer worked a five-pitch walk and Michael Campagna lined out to right-center field, Oliphant recorded his second hit of the game, an RBI single to left, scoring Ramppen.
  • Nevada continued to fight in the fifth inning, scoring another run to keep the game close on a long home run off the bat of Freethy, a solo shot, to get the Wolf Pack to within 4-2.
  • San Francisco erupted for three runs in the eighth inning, solidifying the win as the Dons loaded the bases with Oliphant, Tyvon Moore, and TJ Rogers reaching base on a walk and two hit by pitches.
  • With the bases juiced with one out, Kody Watanabe drove in a run with a six-pitch walk, and Guiliana hit a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Dons a 6-2 lead. Matty Fung reached base on a throwing error from the second baseman shortly after, scoring Rogers and pushing the advantage to 7-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • As a team, San Francisco recorded eight hits, the second most in a game this season.
  • Oliphant, Ramppen, and Guiliana recorded two hits apiece while combining for four extra-base hits.
  • Guiliana finished the game with two doubles, finishing the three-game series with a team-high four. Through seven games this season, Guiliana leads the team with a .333 batting average and four extra-base hits.
  • Oliphant and Ramppen went two-for-three at the plate while recording one RBI and one walk.
  • After Joe Soberon earned the start and went four innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, Andrew Hazell finished the game, shutting down the Nevada bats and earning his first win as a member of the green and gold.
  • Hazell completed his longest outing of the season with a season-high six strikeouts while only giving up two hits.
