Dons Overcome Deficit, Defeat Roadrunners in Series Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (6-3), competing in its first road game of the season, overcame a four-run deficit and defeated CSU Bakersfield (0-9) 11-7 Friday evening at Hardt Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • CSU Bakersfield jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Zavien Watson RBI double to left field. Adam Shew, the Dons' starting pitcher, quickly retired the first two batters before Brock Perreira earned a two-out walk. In the following at-bat, Watson connected on an extra-base hit that scored Perreira from first.
  • The Roadrunners continued to score, adding three more runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to take a commanding 4-0 lead.
  • In the top half of the sixth, the Dons scored seven runs to take their first lead of the evening. Two of the first batters got on base at the start of the inning as AJ Guiliana and Matty Fung reached on a walk and fielding error by the third baseman, Jason Leon.
  • After Michael Campagna punched a soft liner to left field to load the bases, Logan Leax, pinch-hitting for Mattie Thomas, connected on a two-RBI knock down the left-field line, scoring Guiliana and Fung to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
  • Kody Watanabe evened the scoring later in the inning, slicing a double over the first-base bag to score Leax and TJ Rogers, tying the contest at four.
  • Three more runs were plated throughout the half inning, highlighted by Logan Schweizer's two-RBI infield single.
  • San Francisco continued to extend its advantage in the seventh, recording two runs to gain a 9-4 edge. Campagna kicked off the inning with a long solo home run over the left-field wall, while Schweizer added his third RBI of the evening with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • After the Roadrunners cut the lead to 9-5 in the eighth, the Dons added two more insurance runs as Watanabe and Rogers scored on a Schweizer RBI double, extending the lead to 11-5.
  • The Roadrunners' rally fell short in the ninth inning after scoring two runs to cut the Dons' advantage to 11-7.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Schweizer led the team offensively throughout the contest, going two-for-four at the plate, recording five RBI, earning one walk, and scoring one run. Schweizer became the first player to tally five or more RBI in a game since Christian Stapleton had seven in a 15-5 victory at BYU last season on April 7, 2023.
  • Campagna recorded his third home run in the last two games after punching a solo shot over the left-field wall in the seventh inning. Campagna, who leads the team with four home runs this season, ranks tied for third in the WCC.
  • Rogers was active on the basepath, scoring a game-high three runs while recording his first hit of the season.
  • Matt McConnell and Cal Amborn shined on the mound in relief, holding CSU Bakersfield to only one run in 3.2 innings. McConnell, who earned the win, pitched 0.2 innings, gave up just one hit, and recorded a strikeout. Amborn pitched the following three innings, giving up one run on five hits and fanning one batter.
