Baseball Falls to Creighton in Series Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (12-6) dropped the series-opening game at Creighton (13-2) Friday evening, falling 13-5 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After two scoreless innings to start the contest, Creighton took the lead in the third, scoring runs to take a 2-0 advantage. A pair of one-out walks began the bottom half of the frame, followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Teddy Deters and Matt Scherrman to propel the Bluejays to the early lead.
  • San Francisco answered in the top of the fifth inning, plating two runs to tie the game. Patrick Keighran kickstarted the rally with a leadoff single, followed by two straight walks from TJ Rogers and Logan Schweizer to load the bases. With no outs recorded, Matty Fung followed with a hit-by-pitch, scoring Keighran to cut the deficit in half. After AJ Guiliana struck out looking, Kody Watanabe laced a single to left field, scoring Rogers, to even the score at two.
  • Highlighted by a Colby Canales grand slam in the following half inning, the Bluejays regained the lead and held a commanding 6-2 edge after five innings of play.
  • Michael Campagna maneuvered around the basepath in the top of the sixth, scoring the Dons' third run to cut the deficit to 6-3. Leading off the frame with a single, Campagana made his way into scoring position after Keighran earned a four-pitch walk. Later in the inning, after Rogers reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Campagana crossed home plate on a Fung RBI groundout.
  • Creighton broke open the game, scoring five runs in the following two innings to grab a 10-3 lead.
  • Continuing to battle, the Dons added two runs in the top of the eighth on a Blake Pitts RBI groundout and a Logan Azem RBI single to bring the green and gold to within five, 10-5.
  • The Bluejays answered with three more runs in the last of the eighth to solidify the 13-5 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Watanabe led the green and gold offensively, going two-for-five at the plate with one RBI, extending his multi-hit game streak to six.
  • Azem, Kieghran, and Campagna earned one hit apiece in the game.
  • On the mound, Andrew Hazell had a solid outing in his second start of the season, allowing just two runs on two hits and striking out three batters in four innings of work.
