SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Returning to the Hilltop following a three-game series in Portland, the University of San Francisco baseball team (20-28) opened a five-game homestand with a victory over San Jose State (19-28) on Tuesday afternoon, besting the Spartans 9-4 at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Beginning the ball game, Hunter Dorraugh wasted no time to put San Jose State on the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the first inning, giving the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
- Quickly evening up the score, San Francisco took advantage of four consecutive walks to score its first run in the bottom of the first, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Zack Ramppen followed suit with a sacrifice fly to bring home Kody Watanabe, tying the game at two runs apiece. The Dons nearly took the lead in the bottom of the first off a Mattie Thomas single, but Michael Campagna was thrown out at the plate, and the first inning came to an end with the score at two.
- Opening the second inning, Hunter Holzemer made his first appearance on the mound and posted a three-up and three-down inning with one strikeout.
- In the bottom of the second, a Logan Schweizer double and a walk for Myles Kallinger put two men on base for the Dons. A Watanabe triple gave San Francisco its first lead of the ball game, bringing home Schweizer and Kallinger to give the Dons a 4-2 advantage. Shortly after, a Logan Leax single brought Watanabe home, extending the green and gold's lead to 5-2 through two innings of play.
- San Jose State narrowed the gap in the third inning, with Jeriah Lewis reaching home plate to trim the score to 5-3, but San Francisco was quick to re-extend its advantage. Following a walk for Thomas, Schweizer blasted one into left field for a two-run home run, pushing the Dons' lead to 7-3. Soon after, Matty Fung crossed home on a passed ball, ballooning the advantage to 8-3 after three.
- San Francisco continued to add to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, with a Myles Kallinger sacrifice fly bringing home Tyvon Moore for the Dons' ninth run of the game, extending the lead to 9-3.
- Despite the Spartans adding on one more run in the bottom of the sixth, they failed to overcome the Dons' avalanche in the first three innings, as the green and gold notched their third victory over San Jose State of the season, 9-4.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- With the Dons' lone home run of the afternoon, Schweizer picked up his first career Division I home run.
- Watanabe, Leax, and Schweizer each recorded two RBI in the victory, as Watanabe continues to lead the green and gold in RBI.
- Nabbing his third win of the season, Blake Shepardson did not allow a single hit in his two innings on the mound, recording three strikeouts.
