SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (1-0) used a solid defensive effort and a career-high 26 points from Candy Edokpaigbe to earn a 64-40 victory over UNC Greensboro (0-2) in the 2025-26 season opener on Thursday afternoon at War at the Sobrato Center.
San Francisco had two players score in double figures, led by Edokpaigbe's 26 points, while adding seven rebounds and two blocks. Meghan McIntyre tacked on a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Nevaeh Ferrara Horne added five points, 11 rebounds, and two steals.
San Francisco utilized fantastic ball movement throughout the contest, piling up 17 assists on 25 made field goals. McIntyre's seven assists were the most for the Dons, and Paula Tirado also added three assists in 18 minutes off the bench.
The green and gold's defense was effective in forcing turnovers, with three players registering two steals. As a team, the Dons secured 14 takeaways for 16 points off turnovers and held the Spartans to just 18.2 percent (12-of-66) shooting from the field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- After jumping out to a 16-15 advantage, San Francisco went on a 6-0 scoring run with 2:02 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Edokpaigbe, to increase its lead to 22-15, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. The Dons' first-quarter damage primarily occurred in the paint, scoring 18 of their 22 points at the rim.
- San Francisco built that first-quarter lead to 25-17 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 5:13 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three-pointer from Nataša Taušová, to increase its lead to 31-17. The green and gold proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and held a 33-18 advantage heading into halftime.
- After the halftime break, the team held on and increased its advantage to 50-38 heading into the final quarter of play.
- San Francisco kept widening the margin, expanding it to 56-40 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Sophia Priestley's layup, to extend the lead to 64-40 with 21 seconds to go in the contest.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- San Francisco nearly led wire-to-wire, only trailing for 22 seconds in the first quarter.
- The program posted a stellar defensive performance, holding UNC Greensboro to only 18.2 percent (12-of-66) shooting from the field.
- The Dons recorded 17 assists throughout the contest, with McIntyre leading the team with seven.
- Solid on the boards, Ferrara Horne and McIntyre secured double-digit rebounds with 11 and 10, respectively.
- Edokpaigbe scored a game and career high 26 points, surpassing her previous best of 21 against Tarleton State on February 15, 2025, when playing at Seattle U.
