SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (7-5, 0-1) dropped its opening game of the West Coast Conference slate, falling to Oregon State (9-5, 1-0) 74-65 Sunday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
San Francisco had four players score in double figures, led by Aina Cargol, who had 15 points. Candy Edokpaigbe tacked on 14 points and six rebounds, Noelia Mouriño chipped in with 12 points and Nataša Taušová added 11 off the bench.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- In a back-and-forth defensive battle in the first quarter, San Francisco took a two-point lead, 19-17, into the second quarter. The Dons recorded five of the final eight points of the opening period, capped off with two free throws from Edokpaigbe to put the green and gold on top.
- The Dons failed to hold their advantage during the second quarter as the Beavers outscored the Dons 22-10 to take a double-digit lead into the halftime break, 39-29.
- After trimming the deficit to eight, 41-33, at the start of the second half, the green and gold went on a 10-3 scoring run to get within one, 44-43, at the 5:46 mark of the third quarter. Three players scored during the run, highlighted by three-pointers from Cargol and Mara Neira.
- Oregon State regained momentum in the back-half of the third quarter, as it held a four-point edge, 51-47, heading into the final period.
- San Francisco gained its first lead since the opening quarter at the start of the fourth quarter, using a 7-1 scoring run to take a 54-52 advantage at 7:12. Meghan McIntyre concluded the run with a steal and a transition layup.
- Oregon State quickly regained the lead and pushed the margin to eight, 71-63, with 49 seconds remaining. Despite a Mouriño second-chance layup to trim the Beavers' lead to six, 71-65, three straight free throws in the final 35 seconds secured the 74-65 victory for Oregon State.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Cargol scored in double figures for the second straight game, recording a team-best 15 points on five-of-12 shooting. She also added two three-pointers to lead the program.
- Along with Cargol's offensive production, Edokpaigbe, Mouriño, and Taušová recorded 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively.
- Edokpaigbe and McIntyre led the Dons on the glass, securing six rebounds apiece.
- San Francisco won the turnover battle, forcing 18 Oregon State turnovers. Five players recorded at least one steal throughout the contest, with McIntyre leading with three.
