Dons Erase Deficit, Defeat Chippewas in Series Opener

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (3-2) erased a late deficit to win the opening game of its four-game set, defeating Central Michigan (1-4) 3-2 Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Following two scoreless innings to begin the game, Central Michigan jumped ahead in the top of the third inning. A lead-off double from Rees Campanale set the tone in the frame as he later scored on a Zach Knowlton base hit through the right side of the infield, giving the Chippewas a 1-0 advantage.
  • San Francisco quickly answered and tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth. With two runners aboard with two outs following walks to Matteo Bellisimo and Charles-Etienne Pelletier, Zach Ramppen sliced a single to left field, scoring Bellisimo to even the game at a run apiece.
  • Knowlton came through for the Chippewas in the top of the fifth inning as he regained the lead on an RBI single to center field, scoring Cole Kwiatkowski from second base for a 2-1 edge.
  • San Francisco took advantage in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs to take a 3-2 lead. With a runner on and two outs, TJ Rogers slashed an RBI double to left field, tying the game at two. Following a Patrick Keighran six-pitch walk, Bellisimo singled to shortstop as Rogers plated the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead.
  • The Dons kept the Chippewas in check in the final three innings, securing the victory in the series opener.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Bellisimo recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, as he went two-for-three at the plate, scored a run, and earned one walk.
  • Zack Ramppen also posted two hits throughout the contest while recording one of the Dons' two RBI.
  • On the mound, Lance Santerre earned a no-decision as he pitched six solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He also struck out a season-high four batters throughout his outing.
  • Quentin Pohorski earned the win as he pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and striking out a career-high six batters.
