Second Half Comeback Falls Shorts as Gaels Top Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (12-8, 4-3 WCC) came within three points in the second half on Tuesday night, but the Dons fell short in their comeback against Saint Mary's (SMC) as the Gaels (17-2, 6-0 WCC) outlasted the green and gold, 82-68, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

In addition to Fuchs' double-double, the Dons were led by Ryan Beasley, who recorded 15 points and a career-high seven assists, and by Tyrone Riley IV, who tacked on 16 points and four rebounds.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco knocked down two of its first three shots from beyond-the-arc, taking an early 6-4 lead just 2:30 into regulation. The Dons remained on top of the Gaels, 14-13, following a layup from Vukasin Masic at 13:27, but Saint Mary's responded with a 17-0 run before Ryan Beasley sank another triple to halt the bleeding, 30-17. Despite another three-pointer from Beasley at 2:37 that cut SMC's advantage to nine, 37-28, a 5-0 spurt from the Gaels to close out the opening period gave Saint Mary's a 42-28 halftime lead.
  • Saint Mary's kept widening its lead coming out of the locker room, constructing a 60-43 advantage before San Francisco went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Fuchs' layup, to shrink the deficit to 60-50 with 11:27 to go in the contest. The Gaels punched back and delivered crucial baskets down the stretch, extending their lead back to double digits to help SMC secure an 82-68 road win on Tuesday night.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Fuchs notched his fifth double-double of the year for the Dons with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes.
  • Beasley's seven assists mark his most in a single game in his collegiate career and his most in a game since he finished with 6 assists in USF's 74-64 win over San Diego just a few weeks back on Jan. 2.
  • Junjie Wang finished in double figures for the second straight game and fifth time this season with 10 points on 4-of-10 from the field.
  • Six different Dons tallied one steal tonight: Riley IV, Beasley, Wang, Veniamin Abosi, Guillermo Diaz Graham, and Aidan Braccia.
  • The Dons shot well from three-point range, knocking down 11 of 26 long range attempts (42.3 percent).
