SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (12-7, 5-3) earned a narrow 69-65 victory over San Diego (7-14, 1-7) to complete the season sweep on Thursday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
San Francisco had two players score in double figures, led by Candy Edokpaigbe, who had 24 points. Aina Cargol added 16 points, five assists, and three steals, and Noelia Mouriño added seven points and 11 rebounds.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco took control early, scoring the first seven points of the first quarter to take an early advantage. Edokpaigbe paced the Dons throughout the scoring run, posting five points, highlighted by a corner three-pointer in the opening minute.
- San Diego battled back shortly after, gaining its first lead of the contest, 11-9, at 4:58, following an 11-2 scoring run.
- The Dons answered in the back-half of the period, finishing the quarter strong and maintaining a 21-14 edge at the end of the quarter.
- Keeping the lead intact at the start of the second quarter, the green and gold pushed the margin to double-digits, 24-14, following a free throw from Mouriño at 8:56. Despite a late push from the Toreros at the end of the first half, the Dons held a five-point advantage, 32-27, at the break.
- San Diego then took a 47-42 lead with 4:38 left in the third quarter before San Francisco went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 47 with 1:16 to go.
- Going back-and-forth in the final minutes, Cargol knocked down a long three-pointer with four seconds left to trim the deficit to one, 51-50, heading into the final quarter.
- The Toreros controlled the pace of play at the start of the fourth quarter, until the 2:03 mark when a Mouriño free throw gave the green and gold a 63-62 lead.
- Holding on late, the Dons scored six of the final nine points to earn the 69-65 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Edokpaigbe led San Francisco in scoring, posting a team-best 24 points on an efficient six-of-eight from the field. She also shot 90.9 percent from the free-throw line, connecting on 10 of her 11 attempts.
- Cargol recorded 16 points, her sixth straight game scoring in double figures. Along with her scoring, Cargol added five assists, boosting her team-leading season total to 91.
- Olivia Williams provided valuable minutes off the bench, posting six points and four rebounds in a season-high 25 minutes.
- Mouriño recorded double-digit rebounds for the third time in the last four games, with 11 while adding seven points in 25 minutes.
- As a team, San Francisco held San Diego to 36.1 percent shooting, including 27.8 percent (five-for-18) in the fourth quarter. The Dons also outpaced the Toreros in bench points (15-2), points in the paint (26-24), and forced 19 turnovers.
