DONS AT A GLANCE:
- San Francisco takes on Gonzaga for the second and final time in the regular season as West Coast Conference opponents, with sole possession of third place in the conference standings on the line.
- Candy Edokpaigbe scored a game-high 23 points on an efficient 57.1 percent (eight-for-14) shooting last time out in the green and gold's 68-61 victory over Pacific last Thursday. Edokpaigbe, scoring 20+ in a game for the seventh time this season (third in the last four games), boosted her team-leading scoring average to 17.1 points per game, fourth best in the WCC.
- Nataša Taušová recorded a career-best 15 points in the win over the Tigers and was an anchor on defense, totaling four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
- Aina Cargol posted her seventh consecutive double-digit scoring performance, registering 15 points on 60 percent (three-of-five) shooting from the three-point line. In nine conference games, Cargol ranks 11th in the WCC in scoring at 15.0 points per game, leading all true freshmen in the league.
- As a team against Pacific, San Francisco secured 47 rebounds, the ninth time the Dons have totaled 40 or more rebounds in a game this season. Five players recorded six or more rebounds throughout the contest, highlighted by Noelia Mouriño and Michelle Ugwah securing eight apiece. Ugwah's eight rebounds marked a season high, while Mouriño grabbed eight or more in a game for the eighth time this season and fourth time in the last five contests.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
- Gonzaga's three-game winning streak came to an end with a 92-87 overtime loss at Oregon State on Thursday, Jan. 22. Lauren Whittaker led the team, recording 37 points and 14 rebounds in 36 minutes. With that performance, she broke the freshman single-game scoring record, surpassing Heather Bowman's previous mark of 32 points. Whittaker's strong effort on the boards also allowed her to surpass Bowman's previous freshman record of 209 rebounds in a season.
- Whittaker has established herself as one of the nation's top freshmen and was recently named to the Becky Hammon Player of the Year Watch List. She stands out as the only freshman in Division I to make the midseason list, joining a select group of only four freshmen in the award's history to appear on any of the watch lists. In addition to this national recognition, she has earned West Coast Conference honors by being named Freshman of the Week nine times and Player of the Week once this season.
- As a team, Gonzaga leads Division I in three-point percentage at 40.6 percent, the only team in the nation shooting 40 percent or better from distance. The Bulldogs have four players shooting over 40 percent from the three-point line, with Teryn Gardner connecting on 47.8 percent of her attempts. Paige Lofing (47.1), Allie Turner (47.0), and Julia Wilson (41.7) have also helped guide the team from long range.
- In 21 games this season, Gonzaga has totaled 828 total rebounds, third best in the West Coast Conference. On the national level, the Bulldogs ranked ninth in Division I in rebounding margin at +11, one of 18 teams with a double-digit margin. Whittaker leads the program in rebounds per game at 10.3, the lone player in the WCC averaging double-digit rebounds.
SERIES HISTORY:
- San Francisco and Gonzaga are set to meet for the 85th time, the final regular-season meeting as West Coast Conference opponents. The Bulldogs hold a 56-28 edge over the Dons since the first-ever meeting in the 1987-88 season.
- Despite Gonzaga holding a commanding advantage in the all-time series, San Francisco has won two of the last three meetings, highlighted by a season sweep in the 2024-25 campaign.
- The Bulldogs earned an 82-69 victory in the first meeting this season in Spokane on January 15, outscoring the Dons by 10 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Edokpaigbe led the team with 24 points while Cargol and Mara Neira added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
