Broncos Stifle Dons on the Hilltop

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (10-6, 3-2) dropped a 77-67 West Coast Conference decision to Santa Clara (14-4, 4-1) Thursday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco gained an early lead in the opening quarter, using a 9-2 scoring run to take a seven-point advantage. Santa Clara closed the first quarter well, recording eight of the final 10 points for a 21-16 edge.
  • Erasing the five-point deficit in the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Dons scored seven straight points, capped off with an Aina Cargol layup, to take a 23-21 lead. With the green and gold's lead pushed to four, 31-27, with 6:17 remaining, the Broncos closed the half on a 7-2 run and led by one, 34-33, at the break.
  • In a back-and-forth third quarter, neither team led by more than three points until Santa Clara pushed the margin to four, 53-49, with 2:30 left. The Broncos held onto their four-point advantage and led 57-53 at the end of the period.
  • San Francisco failed to gain ground in the final quarter of play as Santa Clara led by as much as 11 late in the fourth. After the Dons trimmed a deficit to nine, 76-67, on a Paula Tirado driving layup, one last Bronco free throw solidified the 77-67 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Two players scored in double figures for San Francisco, led by Candy Edokpaigbe's team-high 19 points. Cargol added 17 points, her third straight game with double-digit points.
Along with her scoring, Cargol totaled seven assists, increasing her team-leading season total to 73.
  • Despite the outcome, the green and gold won the rebounding battle 46-37. Noelia Mouriño recorded a game-high 11 rebounds, her third double-digit rebounding game this season.
  • As a team defensively, San Francisco held Santa Clara to 37.9 percent shooting, well under the Broncos' season average.
