Fuchs Shines as Dons Sweep Tigers in Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (16-15, 8-10 WCC) got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Dons used an all-around effort to take down Pacific (17-14, 8-10 WCC), 72-61, at Alex G. Spanos Center in its regular season finale.

The Dons had three players score in double figures, led by David Fuchs, who finished with a game-high 29 points and team-high seven rebounds. Tyrone Riley IV added 12 points, three steals, and two blocks while Legend Smiley helped out with 11 points, including three triples.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Both teams matched each other out of the gates, with the Dons narrowly leading the Tigers, 15-13, at the under-12 media timeout after a jumper from Ryan Beasley. Each side continued to fight a 23-23 tie, but San Francisco pieced together a 6-0 run with 7:14 left in the first half, culminating in a three-pointer from Smiley, to take a 29-23 lead.
  • The Dons then scored five of the final eight points of the period and entered halftime with a 42-35 advantage. USF capitalized on six Pacific turnovers in the opening half, turning them into 11 points on the other end of the floor.
  • Coming out of the locker room, the Tigers closed the gap to three, 42-39, just 45 seconds into the second half, but San Francisco kept its lead intact in the minutes to follow. USF once again used momentum to grow its lead, putting together another 6-0 run, finished off by Junjie Wang's three, to go in front 59-46 with 11:16 remaining in regulation. Pacific continued to show grit with each possession, but the Dons would lead by at least 11 points for the final 9:36 to wrap up a 72-61 victory. San Francisco shot well from three-point range in the second half, hitting five shots from distance for 15 of its 30 points in the period.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Fuchs' 29 points were his second-most of his career, and also his second-highest point total this season. After previously finishing with 30 points against Pacific on Jan. 31, the forward has now totaled 59 points on 21-of-30 from the floor, 4-of-6 from distance, and 13-of-19 from the free throw line in USF's two games against the Tigers this season.
  • Riley IV was a difference in the passing lanes for San Francisco, tallying a new season-high three steals on Saturday afternoon. Offensively, the sophomore registered double figures for the 17th time this season.
  • The Dons shot well from three-point range, knocking down 10 of 23 long-range attempts, good for 43.5 percent as a team. Smiley led the green and gold with three made triples, reaching double figures for the 12th time this season.
  • San Francisco had a strong showing defensively, holding the Tigers to only 40.0 percent (24-60) shooting from the field and 11.8 percent (2-17) from beyond the arc.
  • USF never trailed in the second half on its way to victory.
  • The green and gold were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team, including a season-high three blocks from Guillermo Diaz Graham.
