SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) baseball team (11-10, 2-0 WCC) rode stellar pitching and two TJ Rogers home runs to outlast Santa Clara (9-12, 0-2 WCC) 2-1, earning its first West Coast Conference series win this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Rogers put San Francisco on the board with a leadoff home run over the left centerfield wall in the second inning.
- After the Broncos failed to push any runs across in the following innings, the Dons built on their lead in the fourth. Rogers flexed his muscle once more, this time launching the baseball over the wall in the left field corner to double up the Broncos, 2-0.
- Setting the tone on the mound, Gauge Lockhart pitched the first five innings for San Francisco, exiting with a final line of five innings pitched, no earned runs, three hits, three strikeouts, and two walks.
- Kai Yovanovich and Quentin Pohorski came on in relief for USF, with Pohorski on the mound to close out the contest. Despite a walk and a triple to begin the ninth inning, which narrowed the gap to just one run, Pohorski slammed the door on Santa Clara by following suit with three straight outs to secure the 2-1 victory and the series win for San Francisco.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Lockhart (1-1) picked up his first win as a Don as the right-hander's five innings pitched also marked his longest outing in the green and gold so far.
- Earning his third save of the year, Pohorski allowed just two hits over three innings as the graduate student lowered his season ERA to 2.12.
- Santa Clara managed just a 0-for-7 showing with runners in scoring position against San Francisco pitchers.
- Rogers led the Dons at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI. The performance marked the second two-homer game of his career (Saturday and Mar. 10, 2024 vs. Saint Peter's). It was also his seventh multi-hit performance of the season.
