Dons Rally Late, Defeat River Hawks in Series Opener

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (7-5) used a late-game rally to earn an 8-5 victory over UMass Lowell (1-6) Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when TJ Rogers came across on an Eddison Esquivel RBI single to center field.
  • The Dons continued to score, increasing their advantage in the bottom of the fifth. Rogers recorded a two-out RBI double, scoring Zack Ramppen, and later stole home to push the lead to 3-0.
  • UMass Lowell battled back and scored five unanswered runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Wyatt Davis tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh, recording a two-RBI single to even the game at five. Tyler Harries followed with a two-run single through the left side of the infield, plating Davis and Brendan Burke to regain the lead for the green and gold at 7-5.
  • Burke completed the comeback for San Francisco in the next frame, reaching base on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, to give the Dons an 8-5 edge. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Three players recorded multi-hit games, led by Esquivel's three-for-four performance at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Harries added three hits and two RBI while Rogers totaled two hits, including a double, an RBI, and scored twice.
  • Kai Yovanovich earned his team-leading third win of the season, pitching 1.1 relief innings, allowing two runs on three hits, and striking out one batter.
  • As a team, San Francisco went eight-for-17 (.471) with runners in scoring position and outhit UMass Lowell 14-9 throughout the contest.
