Women's Basketball Takes on Pepperdine in WCC Championship Third Round

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Following its victory on Friday, the University of San Francisco women's basketball team (17-13) takes on Pepperdine (19-11) in the third round of the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Championship at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 7, at Orleans Arena.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco, the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament, earned a hard-fought 61-52 win over No. 11 San Diego yesterday to open postseason play.
  • Candy Edokpaigbe led the green and gold throughout the contest, posting a game-high 25 points, six rebounds, and one assist. Edokpaigbe's 25-point performance marked the 12th time this season she has recorded 20 or more points in a game.
  • Mara Neira and Aina Cargol contributed on both ends of the floor for the Dons as Neira recorded nine points and knocked down two three-pointers in 36 minutes. Cargol added six points, six rebounds, and four assists. The duo impressed defensively, combining for nine of the team's 13 total steals while Neira added her second block of the season.
  • As a team, San Francisco forced 22 San Diego turnovers, the 11th time the team has forced 20 or more turnovers in a game this season. The most turnovers forced by the Dons this season were 29 in the narrow 67-64 win over Portland at home on December 25.
  • Edokpaigbe remains the lone player on the team, averaging double-digit points through 30 games, averaging a career-best 18.0 points per game. She is also one of three players in the WCC who have scored 500 or more total points this season.
  • Despite only grabbing four rebounds, Noelia Mouriño continues to lead all true freshmen in rebounding this season, averaging 6.9 per game.
SCOUTING THE WAVES:
  • Pepperdine enters its first game of the conference tournament on a four-game winning streak and earned the No. 6 seed and automatic berth into the third round.
  • In its last four games, the Waves are averaging 76.8 points per game, scoring 80+ points twice in wins over Santa Clara and Seattle U.
  • Elli Guiney paces the team offensively, averaging 14.4 points per game, tied for 10th-best in the WCC. She impressed in the dominating 80-63 win over Santa Clara on February 21, scoring 20 points, her seventh 20+ point performance this season, and shot 66.7 percent (four-for-six) from the three-point line.
  • On the glass, Pepperdine ranks second in the league in defensive rebounds, averaging 29.0 per game. Shorna Preston (8.5 RPG) and Bella Green (5.7 RPG) both rank in the top-10 in the conference in rebounds per game, while Preston is second in the WCC in total defensive rebounds at 247.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Saturday's contest marks the 93rd time San Francisco and Pepperdine have faced off, with the Dons holding the all-time series lead over the Waves, 50–42.
  • San Francisco is currently on a five-game winning streak and has defeated Pepperdine in 10 of the last 11 contests dating back to the 2020-21 season.
  • The two teams faced off only once in the regular season, with the Dons earning an 81-70 win on February 14, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. Edokpaigbe paced the green and gold with a career-high 28 points and Sol Castro added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
