San Francisco Falls to Santa Clara in WCC Championship Quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (18-14) fell short in the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Championship Quarterfinal, dropping an 87-69 decision to Santa Clara (23-8) Sunday afternoon at Orleans Arena.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • After falling behind 3-0, San Francisco went on a 7-0 scoring run with 7:41 left in the first quarter, capped off by a bucket from Nevaeh Ferrara Horne, for a 7-3 advantage. Santa Clara battled back near the end of the period and entered the second quarter with a 13-11 advantage.
  • Santa Clara kept adding to its lead, building a 20-13 advantage before San Francisco went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Candy Edokpaigbe, to narrow its deficit to 20-18. The Broncos responded and expanded their lead, leaving the Dons trailing 37-29 at halftime.
  • The Broncos continued to increase their lead after halftime, building a 48-30 advantage before the Dons went on a 7-0 run to trim their deficit to 48-37 with 5:21 to go. Santa Clara countered and stretched its lead to 64-48 heading into the fourth.
  • San Francisco failed to pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final score of 87-69. The green and gold took advantage of their opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of their 21 points in the paint. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Edokpaigbe paced San Francisco offensively, scoring 20 points on 46.1 percent (six-of-13) shooting. Along with her scoring, she added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
  • Neira also scored in double figures for the Dons, posting 17 points while knocking down two three-pointers.
  • Aina Cargol chipped in with five points, eight assists, and two steals.
  • Defensively, San Francisco totaled 12 steals, with Edokpaigbe, Neira, and Ferrara Horne registering a team-best three apiece.
