SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Frank Allocco, Executive Sr. Associate Athletics Director, External Relations for University of San Francisco (USF) Athletics, has announced his retirement from his role at the university, effective June 15.
"The greatest gift of my time at USF has been the people," said Allocco.
"I have been fortunate to work with extraordinary colleagues, generous supporters, devoted fans, passionate alumni, and talented student-athletes who inspired me every day in our joint mission to 'change the world from here'. Together, we celebrated victories, overcame challenges, and strengthened a community built on shared values and purpose. I leave with immense gratitude for the friendships created, the memories shared, and the opportunity to contribute to the proud tradition of Dons Athletics. USF has enriched my life in countless ways, and for that, I will be forever thankful."
Allocco originally came to the Hilltop as the associate head coach for men's basketball in May 2015 under former head coach Rex Walters. In 2016, he transitioned to his current role, which primarily oversees external relations, including managing communications, marketing, ticketing, creative media, and revenue for the athletics department. He also managed various sponsorships for the department, including with Nike, KNBR, and Provident Credit Union.
"We celebrate Frank as he retires, honoring a career rooted in unwavering dedication, a mentorship that has motivated and shaped countless coaches and staff, and an authentic love for our student-athletes," said Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, Interim Director of Athletics.
"His remarkable gift to connect with others has positively impacted countless people in the athletics community, the broader USF community, and the greater Bay Area and beyond. His legacy will continue to inspire for years to come. He will forever be a Don!"
During his time at USF, Allocco served as the chairman of the Swanson Memorial Golf Tournament, the USF Athletics Hall of Fame Committee, and the USF Basketball Tip-Off Reception. He was also a member of multiple search committees and several working university committees, including strategic enrollment planning. Within the West Coast Conference (WCC), Allocco served on the External Affairs cabinet (both as a member and chair) and the Advertising and Branding committee. He was also the sports supervisor for women's basketball, men's soccer, baseball, men's golf, women's golf, volleyball, triathlon, spirit squad, and band throughout his tenure.
Respected locally and nationally, Allocco was a key contributor for many projects on campus, including the renovation of War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, the completion of the Sobrato Club, and the creation of the USF Athletics Hall of Fame and the Silk Family Community Hall. He also created the Dons Honor Club, an official alumni network and support group for former USF student-athletes, team managers, and spirit squad members. As the owner of Excel in Basketball and the president of East Diablo CYO league, he often provided campus tours and motivational speeches to youth groups from around the Bay Area.
Prior to his arrival at USF, Allocco was a legendary high school basketball coach at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. In his 18 seasons at De La Salle, Allocco guided the Spartans to 17 East Bay Athletic League championships, three Northern California titles, nine section titles, and state championships in 2000 and 2006. Over 60 players under his tutelage went on to play college basketball.
Among his many coaching accolades, Allocco was named Student Sports National Coach of the Year and Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year in 2000, California Coaches' Association State Coach of the Year in 2010, and MaxPreps.com State Coach of the Year in 2011. He also served as a head coach at the Jordan Brand All-American game in 2006 and the prestigious McDonald's All-American game in 2014.
Prior to his appointment at De La Salle, Allocco served as head coach at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek for six seasons (1991-97), where he compiled a 167-28 record and guided the Broncos to a Division III state championship in 1995.
A native of New Providence, N.J., Allocco, 73, graduated with a degree in sociology in 1976 from Notre Dame, where he played football and basketball. He was a three-year football letterwinner and played on the Irish's 1973 National Championship team under legendary head coach Ara Parseghian. He also played two seasons of basketball under Digger Phelps.
