Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins is currently the Interim Director of Athletics, providing oversight of the Athletics program and reporting directly to University President, Salvador Aceves.
When Shrieve-Hawkins was hired in 2024 as Deputy Athletics Director for the Dons, then–Director of Athletics Larry Williams exclaimed, “I am absolutely thrilled that Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins is joining our team on the Hilltop. Stephanie is an accomplished leader in intercollegiate athletics with broad experience as a former student-athlete, coach, and multifaceted administrator. Importantly, she has deep Bay Area roots and a strong desire to foster the success of our student-athletes and the University of San Francisco. She will be an invaluable colleague to me and our entire community.”
A seasoned collegiate administrator with over 20 years of leadership experience at NCAA Division I and II institutions, the Bay Area native was hired as the Director of Athletics at San Francisco State University in May 2018. While there, she was named to the Division II Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) Board of Directors for the 2020–21 year and served through 2024. She also served on the Men’s Soccer Regional Advisory Committee, the Women’s Volleyball National Committee, and the Advisory Group to support the work of the NCAA Board of Governors Subcommittee on Congressional Engagement and Action. In addition, she served a year as Chair of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Executive Council and was a mentor in the ADA Mentorship Program.
Shrieve-Hawkins was integral to creative renovation projects for athletics facilities upgrades, strategic planning for both the athletics department and the university, and served on the President’s Leadership Team, the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management’s Executive Team, and the Foundation Board’s Committee on Athletics. She also served as the Deputy Title IX Officer.
Prior to her time at SF State, Shrieve-Hawkins served as the Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Compliance Officer at Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga from July 2006 to April 2018. Her duties with the Gaels included supervising compliance and student services, monitoring the financial aid budget for athletic grants-in-aid, and overseeing operations and recruiting budgets as they related to Title IX compliance. She also provided guidance to the University President and Cabinet on NCAA compliance matters and served as the liaison with the West Coast Conference office on compliance and Title IX issues. In addition, she was selected to serve on the Division I Amateurism Fact-Finding Committee from 2016 to 2018.
Before this role, she served as the Associate Director of Athletics–Student Services/Senior Woman Administrator at UC Irvine from September 2004 to August 2006, where she served on the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for Intercollegiate Athletics and the Executive Committee for Campus Development. She oversaw internal operations of the department along with multiple sports programs. As a member of the Big West Executive Council, she also served on the Big West Compliance Committee and chaired the membership’s swimming and diving programs and championships.
Prior to that position, Shrieve-Hawkins served as the Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator at Saint Mary’s from September 2000 to August 2004, where she oversaw compliance, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and internal operations. She was also the athletic administrator for men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and softball. As SWA, she was a member of the West Coast Conference Executive Council.
Shrieve-Hawkins began her administrative career as the Director of Development for Olympic Sports at the University of California, Berkeley. She provided direct support to coaches in raising annual fund dollars for athletic scholarships and participated in capital projects, including Edwards Stadium and Haas Pavilion.
Although she has been in administration for over two decades, Shrieve-Hawkins also has experience as a coach. She served as an assistant women’s volleyball coach at the University of California, Berkeley, from March 1997 to 1998 and as head volleyball coach at Contra Costa College (July 1996–June 1997) in San Pablo, Calif. She also coached various club programs, including Golden Bear Volleyball, Magnum Volleyball, and Starlings Volleyball. Notably, she first began her career in education as a substitute teacher for the Hayward and Oakland School Districts in January 1994 before becoming an elementary school teacher in the West Contra Costa School District in January 1995.
Personally, Shrieve-Hawkins was a highly recruited volleyball player from Berkeley High School and was selected to the USA Volleyball Junior Elite Training Camp as one of the top 36 prospective student-athletes in the nation — and one of just five setters in her class. She was recruited to California State University, Fullerton, where she was named team captain her junior and senior years. The San Francisco–born and Berkeley-raised athlete finished her collegiate career as Cal State Fullerton’s all-time leader in assists, a record she held for 12 years. Additionally, she ranks among the program’s top ten all-time in assists, blocks, and aces. In the classroom, she was named to the Honor Roll/Dean’s List in 1990 and 1991 and earned the All–Big West Scholar-Athlete Award those same years.
She graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree in child development and humanities, then continued her education at Saint Mary’s College, obtaining a master’s degree in kinesiology. Most recently, she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice at CSU East Bay in 2024, focusing on how the intersectionality of women in athletic leadership shapes their paths and experiences. In the summer of 2024, she taught Sports Psychology in the kinesiology graduate program at Saint Mary’s College.
Shrieve-Hawkins was inducted into the Berkeley High School Athletics Hall of Fame in May 2019. That same month, she was featured in the San Francisco Business Times as one of the Bay Area’s Most Influential Women in Business. She was also the first girl to play Little League baseball and one of the first altar girls in her hometown of Berkeley and the Diocese of Oakland.
Shrieve-Hawkins is married to Spencer Hawkins, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a student-athlete in their Division I Swimming and Diving Program. They have two sons, Oliver and Axel.
