1950 was the first undefeated, untied season for USF as the Dons finished 10-0-0 with 47 goals and only four goals against. Key victories in 1950 for USF were 5-0 over Stanford, 6-0 and 4-1 over rival Santa Clara, 7-0 over California and 6-1 over Fresno State.
This extraordinary team was denied a playoff for the national championship when the University of Connecticut replied to USF’s letter requesting a postseason match-up, explaining that they had “already won the national championship,” totally disregarding the fact that they only played in the northeast part of the country.
Seven Dons players were named to the Northern California Intercollegiate Soccer Conference first team: Dick Baptista F, Angelo Carmassi G, Bob Korbus MF, Jose Leon F, Joe Matute F, Steve Negoesco FB and Olifumni Osibogun D.
Did You Know? Controversy surrounded the way the national champion was selected at the end of the 1950 season. The Dons had hoped to play Connecticut and use the game as a showcase to then get an invitation to the second annual Soccer Bowl. However, the Huskies turned down USF’s offer for a postseason match-up and both teams were left out in the cold when the Soccer Bowl bids were handed out. Instead, in the second Soccer Bowl, held in St. Louis in December 1950, Penn State defeated Purdue 3-1. But the Intercollegiate Soccer Football Association of America surprisingly declared West Chester's 8-0-0 squad the national champion despite the Soccer Bowl result and much to the dissatisfaction of undefeated Penn State and USF.
