Arthur Moreira 2016-17 head shot

Arthur Moreira

6th Season (7th Overall)
Sonoma State '16

Arthur Moreira is in his seventh season working under head coach Molly Goodenbour, and in 2022-23, he begins his sixth year as an assistant coach with the program.

Moreira heads the Dons' international recruiting efforts. During his first five years with the program, the number of international student-athletes on the roster has increased by 550% (from only two to 11 in 2021-22). The level of diversity on the team has increased more than four times over, starting with only two international countries represented on the roster to having nine foreign countries on the 2019-20 roster.

The school won their first WNIT game in program history during the 2020-21 season, led by athletes recruited by Moreira to the Hilltop. San Francisco is the only school in the WCC that has swept the conference Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards doing so four times since the start of the 2020-21 season.

Moreira's impact on the program has been felt both academically and athletically:
  • Academic
    •  The team fall GPA increased from 3.48 in 2017 to 3.54 in 2018, including a 4.00 from an international player
    • Seven of the international student-athletes on the 2017-18 roster posted cumulative GPAs of 3.31 or higher, including six of them at 3.65 or above (five being true freshmen).
    • The team has had five players earn West Coast Conference All-Academic honors, including two for international players
    • 100% of student-athletes who have played out their four-year careers at USF during Moreira’s tenure have graduated

  • Athletic
    • Two international student-athletes (Anna Seilund, Michaela Rakova) who were reserves during 2016-17 became the team’s leading scorers the very next year and earned All-WCC awards
    • Seilund (Denmark) and Rakova (Slovakia) both currently play for their respective countries’ senior national women’s basketball teams
    • Lucija Kostic (Croatia) was one of only two freshmen to earn WCC Player of the Week in 2018-19
    • The team had multiple players among the WCC’s top-20 in rebounding, field goal percentage, assists and free-throw percentage in 2018-19 – after only having one or none in the past two years
    • Ioanna Krimili (Greece) named WCC Newcomer of the Year in 2020-21, 11-time Freshman of the Week, three-time WCC Player of the Week, broke the school's single season three-point record during the COVID shortened 2020-21 season. Career points per game is second in program history.
    • Claudia Langarita (Spain) three-time WCC Freshman of the Week.
Moreira spent his first season with the program in 2016-17 as the director of basketball operations. In that role, he was in charge of day-to-day operations for the University of San Francisco women’s basketball program.

He came to USF after five years as a student assistant for the men’s basketball program at Sonoma State University, where he helped the coaching staff with all aspects of the program, including day-to-day operations, coaching and academic supervising of the student-athletes.

During his last year at Sonoma, the Seawolves finished the season as the ninth-best scoring defense in the NCAA and recorded wins over two top-25 opponents.

Prior to his time at Sonoma State, Arthur ran his own youth basketball team where he coached the youth from a poor community in his hometown in Brazil.

A native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Moreira attended high school at Colegio Marista Dom Silverio and played for Minas Tenis Club, one of the best U19 basketball programs in South America.

Moreira graduated from Sonoma State in 2016 with a degree in business marketing.
