John Arthur "Chubby" Cox III was born on December 29, 1955 in Philadelphia, and attended Roxborough High School. He played two years at Villanova university as a 6' 2" guard, and then transferred to USF, where he ranked in the top ten for assists in a season.

He was drafted in the 8th Round (7th pick) by the Chicago Bulls in 1978. However, Cox played professionally in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) from 1978 to 1981. Over three seasons with the Philadelphia Kings, Pennsylvania Barons, and Wilkes-Barre Barons, Cox averaged nearly 22 points per game. He scored 50 points in a December 28, 1979 game against the Lancaster Red Roses.

Cox joined an NBA roster in 1982 and he played seven games for the Washington Bullets, scoring 29 total points. He also played professionally in Venezuela for Beverley Hills in Caracas, and was living there when his son, John Arthur Cox IV was born, who also attended USF and played basketball there. Both father and son were inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2019. Cox's brother-in-law was former NBA player Joe Bryant and his nephew was Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant (Wikipedia).
