Nelson to Head Transition Team Including Dr. Jeremy Howell and Elizabeth Miles
(San Francisco) – Dr. Gary Nelson has been named as the
Interim Athletic Director for the University of San Francisco as
announced today by USF Vice President of Business and Finance
Charlie Cross. Dr. Nelson will lead the transition team, which will
also consist of USF Faculty Advisory Representative (FAR) Dr. Jeremy Howell and Elizabeth Miles, an experienced administrator in
Division I Athletics.
"Gary has re-energized the golf program at USF and led the
men's team to the West Coast Conference Championship in
2009," Cross said. "All three of these colleagues are
highly respected by their peers and I am extremely grateful that
they have agreed to offer their expertise and time to USF as we
build our athletics department."
Cross also announced the foundation for the search process for
USF's next Athletic Director.
"I am happy to report that Jeff Brand, the Dean of the USF
School of Law, will lead the search committee for a new athletic
director," Cross said. "This will be a deliberate,
thoughtful, nation-wide search and our goal is to bring the
best-qualified candidate to the Hilltop. We will not rush the
process simply to fill the position."
Dr. Nelson moves into his new role after serving as the head coach
of the USF men's golf program since 2005 and entered his new
role as Director of Golf for the 2009-10 season. Dr. Nelson
supervised the rebuilding of the men's golf program and in
2009 captured the first league title in 19 years. The 2009 WCC
Coach of the Year helped land one of the highest touted recruiting
classes in program history for the 2010-11 season.
In his new capacity as interim athletic director, Dr. Nelson will
report directly to Charlie Cross.
In addition to his duties as the FAR, Dr. Howell sits on the WCC
Executive Council. Dr. Howell also has a joint appointment in the
Exercise and Sports Science department and the Sports Management
Graduate program.
Miles is a new hire at USF after spending the last 20 years as a
senior administrator in the Cal Athletics Department. During her
tenure in Berkeley, Miles served in several capacities including
Assistant Athletic Director for Olympic Sports, Operations Director
in Athletic Development and Business Manager. An accomplished
athlete, Miles was a member of the 1984 US Olympic Rowing Team.
