SAN BRUNO — Six University of San Francisco athletes were named to the West Coast Conference's Fall All-Academic first team and another 11 earned honorable mention honors.

"This is an indication of how much work and effort our student-athletes are putting into their academics," said Brenda Giarratano, Director of Academic Support for Student-Athletes. "It demonstrates their time management skills by being able to balance the demands of their sports and their studies. I'm really proud of their academic success and it shows what USF is all about in creating well-rounded people."

Five athletes from the cross-country program earned first-team honors, led by junior Jeremy Grace, who has a 3.96 GPA, finished ninth at the WCC Championships and was named Track & Field/Cross Country Scholar Athlete for the second consecutive year. Grace is an English major. His teammate Will Marquardt, a junior, was also a first-team selection with a 3.94 GPA as a history major that finished 15th at the WCC Championships. Five other women's soccer players were honorable mention selections: Alyson Drake, Afiya Roberts, Joan Piasta, Noelle Salter and Ashley O'Brien.

The 2010 WCC Fall All-Academic teams honor some of the league's finest examples of the consummate scholar-athlete. At the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports. To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his or her team.
