SAN FRANCISCO – A fitting end to the collegiate career of senior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund, the San Francisco men's soccer team dueled with Portland to a 0-0 tie on Senior Day at Negoesco Stadium.
With the tie, USF finishes the 2012 campaign with an overall mark of 6-7-5, 4-5-3 in West Coast Conference action, and the Pilots end the year at 7-9-3 (5-5-2 WCC).
“It was really our goal to go ahead of Portland in the WCC standings and finish fourth, so our game plan was really to be coming out with a lot of energy, and put a lot of pressure on them,” coach Erik Visser said after the match.
The pressure was seen early and often as the USF offense took 25 total shots in the contest, including 12 in the first half. Portland keeper Justin Baarts finished with 11 saves on the day.
In the 22nd minute, The Dons earned a corner kick taken by Mauricio Diaz De Leon. His boot came front and center to Miguel Aguilar's foot for a shot. The ball was saved by Portland's Baarts, but back into the field of play. Aguilar got two good rebounding efforts, both also stopped by Baarts, to end the scoring opportunity and keep the clean sheet intact for both squads.
After 90 minutes the scoreless tie remained, with two overtimes looming. The ball primarily stayed in possession of the Dons throughout the day, a tribute to total team effort by the defense.
“It wasn't only the back four, I think collectively the whole team defended well,” Visser said. “I don't think we gave them more than two or three opportunities, and I give a tribute to the whole team. A unit of 11 players really defended well throughout.”
Less than two minutes into the first overtime, Aguilar, who finished with four shots on frame, had another go at the goal that was stopped by the right post. USF's Danny Kirkland had a long attempt saved in the 94th minute as Baarts stymied yet another offensive attack in the contest. After 110 minutes the scoreboard was still unblemished for both squads, who settle for a draw in their final match of the season.
Three men say farewell after their final play on the pitch at Negoesco Stadium in Roslund, defender Jorge Martinez and midfielder Fred Loechen.
Roslund leaves the USF program after compiling a senior season goals-against average of 0.99 and four shutouts. The four-year starter from Denver, Colo., finished out his USF career with 265 total saves in net. Martinez, a Napa, Calif., native who played two seasons for the Dons, capped off his collegiate career by an assist in last week's tie against Saint Mary's. For Loechen, from Silijan, Norway, his time on the pitch was limited by injuries in his three seasons at USF, but his professionalism and athletic accomplishments of graduating in three years are to be admired.
“It's always a very emotional moment when you see young men 17, 18 coming in, and four years later they are men and you hope that you contributed to some of their life skills,” Visser reflected on the impact of his outgoing players. “Three of them; all different. It's a small, but very strong senior class. For me, when we talk about the academic and athletic components, they personify all of it.”
