SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Sophomore Eric Causey raced to his second individual title of the season and a course record at the Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park Saturday.
Causey, from Encinitas, Calif., finished the 8,000 meter loop in 23:39.6 to break the course record and pace the Dons to a seventh place team finish.
"Eric Causey got a big win over an impressive field breaking the course record. I'm pleased with the way Eric ran up front and confident in his training," assistant coach Chris Shane said. "He made a move late in the race to separate himself from the lead pack and closed hard. He is firing on all cylinders and looking good going into the conference championships in two weeks."
Causey won the USF Invitational to start the season, and has continued his dominance as the season has progressed. During the his freshman track season in the spring of 2013, the sophomore from Encinitas, Calif., was a NCAA Preliminary Championships qualifier in the 10,000 meters after posting a school record in the event. He beat his closest competitor at the Bronco Invitational, WCC foe Rajpaul Pannu of Saint Mary's, by nearly 12 seconds.
Jarrett Moore was the second Don to cross the finish line, with a time of 23:36.8 to finish 36th overall. Gustavo Mena rounded out the top three for USF, finishing in 24:56.6 as the Dons took seventh with 191 points. Of note in the team standings, USF bested the 10th place team in the West Region, UC Davis, who finished 14th at the Invitational.
Jose Madera, running unattached in the competition, finished fourth overall with a time of 23:55.5
A contingent of USF women was also present at the Invitational, as the Dons took 12th as a team. USF was paced by freshman Lily Engelbrekt, who earned 41st in the 6,000 meter race, and junior Kailey Ulland, whose time of 21:30.9 was good for 48th.
"On the ladies' side Lily and Kailey led the team with very strong times, and Ashley Moffett and Sophia Volk also had season-best performances," Shane noted. "Lily and Kailey dug deep and found a little extra at the end to distinguish themselves this morning. They likely earned their spot on our conference championship team today."
Up next for the men and women is a trip to Malibu, Calif., to compete at the WCC Championships on Nov. 2.
