SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco Diamond Dons (11-13) dropped a 5-2 decision to California (15-10) Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond.
The Dons squandered multiple scoring opportunities on the afternoon, putting runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the first, second, sixth and ninth innings without scoring.
After falling behind California 4-0, USF scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a
Bradley Zimmer RBI single and a Zachary Turner RBI groundout.
The Golden Bears added a run in the ninth to increase their lead to three and Dylan Nelson held the Dons scoreless in the final frame for his second save of the season.
“We didn't score in the first with a runner on third,” said USF Head Coach
Nino Giarratano, “and we missed an easy ground ball in the third which we should have caught. I don't think they should have scored all day. We made too many mistakes out there; we didn't give up any clean runs today. Our failure to execute offensively, to put the ball in play, really got us. It's a really frustrating game because if we played halfway decent we win that game. We just weren't good enough today.”
The Dons are back in action Thursday, hosting Saint Mary's at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
