Box Score
PROVO, Utah – Abe Bobb took a shutout into the ninth, and
Bradley Zimmer and Zachary Turner combined for eight RBIs and powered the Dons offense to a 10-1 win at BYU Thursday. USF has now won 24 of its last 32 games, and seven in a row. The victory clinched a West Coast Conference tournament spot for the Dons and has them in the lead for the #2 seed, two-and-a-half games ahead of third-place San Diego.
Bobb threw the Dons first complete game of the season, scattering eight hits and allowing only an Adam Law solo home run in the ninth. The redshirt junior was very efficient, throwing just 105 pitches on the evening. The win evens Bobb's record at 5-5 and drops his ERA to a season-low 3.77.
Turner, the West Coast Conference player of the month in April, was 3-for-4 and drove in five runs, three on a third-inning home run that gave the Dons a lead they would never relinquish. Turner extended his conference lead in RBIs and took sole possession of first in hits as well. He raised his average to .354 on the year and is the second player in the conference to eclipse the 100-hit mark.
Zimmer was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three doubles. He walked and was hit by a pitch in reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. Zimmer has now scored three or more runs in six games this season.
Justin Maffei and
Ryan Matranga each scored twice, and
Bob Mott and
Bob Cruikshank each drove in a run.
“Abe was great today,” said USF head coach
Nino Giarratano. “He had command of his fastball and located his off-speed pitches for strikes. I'm very proud of his effort and ability to continue working at the game. Bradley and Zack helped us put runs on the board and get ahead early. It was good to see us put everything together in all phases of the game. We need to continue to work at getting better in all aspects of the game as the regular season winds down. We appreciate all our fans out here for their support, it's been a big boost for us this season.”
The teams meet again tomorrow for the second game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. PDT and will be broadcast on USFDons.com/live and BYU TV.
