Lombardi scores twice as Dons beat Gonzaga

SAN FRANCISCO—Freshman Aaron Lombardi made an immediate impression. In only his second collegiate game, Lombardi scored to give the Dons the lead and again in double overtime to give them the 2-1 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon.
"He's a kid that's coming long," San Francisco head coach Eddie Soto said. "We knew what type of player he was going to be and the impact he would be on this team. This is why we brought him on. He's a dynamic kid who can make plays, who can score goals."
Time was beginning to slip away in double overtime and that is when Miguel Aguilar dribbled down the right side towards the end line and delivered a low cross, which found Lombardi at the foot of the goal and he chipped it in for the game-winning goal.
San Francisco (8-3-2, 2-0-0 WCC) has begun WCC play 2-0 for the first time since 2011.
"It shows how much we've grown as a team," Soto said. "From playing on Friday night, which was a really hard game against Portland, and to come back less than 48 hours to play another hard game against Gonzaga and go into overtime and find a way to win… It speaks volumes of this group."
The Dons will be back in action on Friday when they play host to Pac-12 powerhouse Stanford.
"We're taking it one game at a time," Soto said. "We worried about Friday and did our job. On Friday night and Saturday, we prepared for today's match. We're not looking ahead. We're going to enjoy this win. We're going to recover tomorrow.
"It will be a good test to see where we are nationally."
The Dons had a number of chances to get on the board early on.
In the fifth minute, Bryce Kaminski took a pass near the top left corner of the box and fired it off the left post, nearly giving the Dons the lead. Two minutes later, Manny Padilla was just outside the right corner of the box when he drilled his kick just high.
Lombardi got into the mix when off a corner kick by Danny Kirkland he headed it towards the goal but it was caught near the right post by Gonzaga goalkeeper Ben Willis.
Kaminski nearly ha d a highlight reel goal when in the 32nd minute Jesus Del Toro had his kick in the box deflected and Kaminski recovered the ball and bicycle kicked it right to Willis.
The Dons came out of the halftime break and quickly got on the board. Only seconds after a Christian De Luna header went off the crossbar, Lombardi caught a loose ball just outside of the box and sent a rocket into the back of the net for the goal, giving the Dons a 1-0 lead.
Gonzaga answered in the 51st minute when the Dons were called for a penalty and Clark Philips scored on the penalty kick to even the match.
In the 62nd minute, David Garrett raced down the right side of the field and crossed it into the box, Willis dove to knock it away but it rattled around near the foot of the goal before finally being cleared by Gonzaga.
The Dons took 23 shots with 10 shots on goal and eight corner kicks.
