The Basics With each meet, the Dons continue to add student-athletes to the competitive slate. Heading into their largest contingent of the spring thus far, San Francisco stays close to home while competing at the Johnny Mathis Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State, Friday and Saturday. Two women, Elena Burkard and Sophie Curl, will open up their outdoor season Saturday. Curl, a redshirt senior from Bellingham, Wash., has raced at the NCAA preliminary championships in her past two seasons, reaching the finals in the 1,500 meters in 2012. She will take the field in the 800 meters this weekend. Burkard, a sophomore distance runner from Baiersbronn, Germany, recently took the U23 title at the German National Cross Country Championships. Her first race of the season comes at the 1,500 meter distance. Last Time Out—Women The USF sprinters continued their strong spring at UC Davis, with the 4x100 meter relay team improving on their school record in the event, posting a time of 48.58 seconds to take fourth. As a team, the women finished fourth in the overall standings. Dons in the Regional Rankings Despite running a limited slate during the indoor season, the Dons dot the latest USTFCCCA regional rankings, with the women standing in 17th and the men in 19th. Preseason national outdoor rankings are expected to be released March 25, with the first regional index coming April 8.
