MORAGA, Calif.—Abe Bobb went the distance and threw his second complete game of the season but it was not enough as the Dons fell to Saint Mary's 4-1 in West Coast Conference action on Friday afternoon.
Â
San Francisco (22-26, 9-16 WCC) will resume action against Saint Mary's on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Â
"Abe's been great in this conference for four years," San Francisco head coach
Nino Giarratano said. "He's pitched his innings and today was one of those games we gave up the lead early. It's one of those days where two swings of the bat was enough."
Â
After the first two Dons batters were retired, Atkinson walked and then followed by a double from
Zack Turner to give them runners on second and third.
Brendan Hendriks came up and just got underneath a pitch and flew out to right to end the inning.
Â
With a runner on and one out in the third, Saint Mary's catcher Nate Nolan hit the first pitch from Bobb to deep left and just out of the reach of a leaping
Matt Sinatro for a two-run home run to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead.
Â
Saint Mary's had another chance to score in the fourth when Michael Valentin, Jr. roped a triple down the rightfield line but a relay from
Derek Atkinson to
Michael Eaton to
Justin McCullough gunned down Ian McLoughlin at the plate to end the inning.
Â
The Gaels tacked on two more in the fifth on a two-out single to center from Darian Ramage to give them a 4-0 lead.
Â
Bobb went eight innings on just 85 pitches. His eight innings gives him 273.1 for his career, moving him past Ken Bowman (269.2) for sixth on the Dons' all-time list.
Â
The Dons got on the board in the eighth inning when Turner hit his second double of the day to score
Nico Giarratano and cut the lead to 4-1. Turner went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
