CHICAGO – Former USF men's soccer standout and current L.A. Galaxy defender Dave Romney has been called up to the U.S. U-23 Men's National Team, announced by head coach Andi Herzog on Nov. 9.
Romney (Irvine, Calif.) joins a roster of 19 players that will compete in a pair of friendlies against Brazil in preparation for a March playoff against Colombia that will determine whether the U-23 squad can secure a berth in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The first of the two friendlies against Brazil will take place on Nov. 11 in Recife, Brazil with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. PT. The second contest will be on Nov. 15 in Belem, Brazil at 12 p.m. PT.
This will be the first time Romney has played with any level of the U.S. national team after coming up through the L.A. Galaxy Academy.
Romney made his MLS debut with the Galaxy on July 25 against the Houston Dynamo, and ended up starting two matches while appearing in five contests overall. He started the year with the L.A. Galaxy II, making appearances in International Champions Cup matches against Club America and FC Barcelona before getting the call to join the Galaxy, becoming the first player to ever jump from
Los Dos to the first team.
During his four-year career on the Hilltop, Romney earned All-WCC honors each season, including a second-team nod as a senior in 2014. He was also a WCC All-Academic selection on two occasions. Overall, he appeared in 72 games for the Dons.
