USF's men's golf team will return to action on Thursday when the Dons join a strong field at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford at Stanford Golf Course.
The Dons are part of a 24-team field which includes No. 7 Stanford, No. 11 USC, No. 15 Oregon, No. 24 UNLV, Arizona State, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Loyola Marymount, Minnesota, Northwestern, Pepperdine, Princeton, San Jose State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, SMU, TCU, UAB, UC Davis and Washington State.
Among the individuals who will be competing is Paul Barjon of TCU, who won the 2013 event with an 11-under score of 199.
Teams will play 18 holes over three days on the venerable Stanford Golf Course, which will play to a par of 70 and 6,727 yards for this event. The Dons will be paired with Boise State and Princeton for the first two days of the tournament. The three squads will tee off from hole No. 10 starting at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday and at 8:25 from the first hole on Friday. Teams will be paired according to scores for Sunday's final round.
The Dons lineup will consist of junior Sebastian Crookall-Nixon, redshirt freshman Mathias Wentjarvi, senior Emil Liljeroth, freshman Jalen Griffin and sophomore Max Alcorn.
"We are starting a very young team again this week at Stanford," said head coach Rich Yokota. "We will lean on three underclassmen along with Seb and Emil who will have to help the younger guys who might not be as familiar with the course.
"It will be key for us play within ourselves and trust our preparation. Mathias is improving every day, which is really encouraging for us moving forward. Max and Jalen both put a lot of balls in play and their games fit Stanford Golf Course."
The Dons will try to improve on their finish in this event a year ago, when the squad placed 17th in an 18-team field with a 54-hole score of 880 (+40). Stanford won the team event with a 25-under score of 815 while Cardinal Patrick Rodgers claimed medalist honors with a winning score of 196 (-14).
USF is coming off an eighth place finish at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate held March 6-7 in Scottsdale. Crookall-Nixon posted three under par scores and finished tied for third with a 54-hole total of 211 (-5), which was his best showing of the season. The Englishman tied for 48th in The Goodwin last year after carding rounds of 72-73-72 for a 54-hole total of 217 (+7). However, he tied for sixth in the 2013 event as a freshman with a three-under score of 207, which included an opening round 66.
"Seb has made an amazing turnaround," said Yokota. "After missing the top five for Palm Desert, he won our qualifier by 10 shots and then nearly won our last event at Desert Mountain. He has shown tremendous character during some tough stretches while he was working through some major changes in his game. He looks to be in outstanding form at the right time of the year with the conference championships just around the corner."
Originally named the U.S. Intercollegiate, the event was renamed The Goodwin prior to the 2014 edition in honor of former longtime Stanford golf coach Wally Goodwin. Past champions of the event include Tom Watson, Mark O'Meara, Corey Pavin and Duffy Waldorf.
