SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco track team qualified four student-athletes to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, announced today. The Dons will send three women and one man to compete in Austin, Texas, on May 28-30.
Headlining the selections is 2014 All-American Jana Soethout, who looks to earn her third trip to the finals in the 10,000 meters. Soethout enters the preliminary championships with the sixth-fastest time in the region, clocking in at 33:30.30. The school record-holder in the event and reigning Anne Dolan Female Student-Athlete of the Year will run in the semifinal round on Thursday, May 28, at 9 p.m. CT.
Also competing at the 10,000 m distance, senior Jose Madera heads to Texas at No. 18 on the preliminary qualifying list. The school record-holder in the event enters the field with a qualifying mark of 29:07.75, earned at the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 2. This will be Madera's third straight trip to the semifinals in the 10,000. The Anaheim, Calif., native looks to advance to his first-ever championship round on Thursday at 9:40 p.m. CT.
Two women will double up in the competition, racing both in the 1,500 and 5,000 m.
Elena Burkard, a junior from Baiersbronn, Germany, qualified for the 1,500 with a time of 4:20.32, set at the West Coast Last Chance Meet on May 9. She cruised to the victory at Cox Stadium and turned in a time good for 15th in the field of 48 student-athletes.
In the 5,000 m, Burkard's mark of 16:09.24 stands in 19th in the West, set at April's Stanford Invitational where she finished 10th. This will be her second go-around at regionals in the 5,000. She finished ninth in the semifinals at the event a year ago, narrowly missing the championship field due to racing in a speedy heat and being edged out of a final spot in the field.
Kate Jamboretz, a redshirt junior from Boise, Idaho, makes her first regional appearance, and will join Burkard in both the 1,500 and 5,000. Jamboretz' time of 4:24.92 in the 1,500 is good for 45th on the qualifying lists. In the 5,000, she raced to a 5th place finish at the Mt. SAC Relays to turn in a time of 16:31.60, 43rd in the West Region.
The duo will compete in the first round of the 1,500 m on Thursday, May 28, at 5:30 p.m. CT, with the quarterfinals taking place Saturday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The 5,000 m semifinals take place Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CT.
The NCAA West Preliminary Championships will be streamed online from Austin, Texas, and the live stream can be accessed at ncaa.com/liveschedule. Student-athletes with the top 12 time/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West prelims will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 10-13.
