Dons Face Saint Mary's in Sunday Matinee

Watch Live on TheW.tv | Live Stats

USF will try to hold onto its place in the lead pack of the West Coast Conference when the Dons meet longtime rival Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon in Moraga beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Dons (6-6-0, 2-1-0) are in a three-way tie for second place in the WCC with Pacific and San Diego. All three squads trail first place Portland, which has won its first three conference matches of the season. USF rebounded from a 3-2 loss to Portland last Friday to defeat Gonzaga, 2-1 in overtime on a golden goal by Josh Smith after David Garrett provided the equalizer with five minutes left in regulation.

USF is 4-1-0 over its last five matches while Saint Mary's (5-7-3, 1-2-0 WCC) has dropped two matches last week to San Diego and Loyola Marymount, both by the scores of 2-1. The Gaels recent slide is on the heels of a three match winning streak, which included a 2-1 win over No. 15 West Virginia in Morgantown on Oct. 1.

The Dons are 2-3-1 in their last six matches against the Gaels, which included a bitter, 1-0 overtime loss last year at Negoesco Stadium when Will Kendall provided the game-winner.

USF has scored 11 goals in its last six matches, five of which have come off the foot of Garrett, who currently ranks second in the conference with seven goals on the season. With two assists against Gonzaga, Aaron Lombardi now leads the WCC in assists with six.

A look at this week's conference schedule has front-running Portland home for a pair of matches against Loyola Marymount and San Diego. The Toreros will play at Gonzaga on Friday before venturing to Merlo Field on Sunday. The Pacific Tigers, 10-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the WCC, will play host to Santa Clara in its only match of the week on Saturday.
