SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The USF men's soccer team was well-represented on the postseason All-West Coast Conference squads, announced by the conference on Tuesday. The Dons had six student-athletes take home all-conference recognition, matching Saint Mary's for the second-most among WCC teams this year.
Highlighting the list was junior midfielder
Leon Schwarzer, who earned first-team honors in his debut season on the Hilltop after transferring from USC Upstate. Schwarzer tied for the team lead with three goals in WCC play, including scores in two of the final three contests of the year against Pacific and Loyola Marymount. Overall, Schwarzer finished second on the team with five goals while adding an assist.
Senior forward
David Garrett and fellow senior defender
Joshua Smith each earned a spot on the second team, along with junior midfielder
Aaron Lombardi.
Garrett tallied three goals in conference action that included a pair of scores in USF's 2-0 win over Santa Clara in the WCC opener. Garrett – who was a first-team selection last season – led the team and ranked third in the conference in goals this year with seven overall.
Smith helped anchor the Dons' defensive backfield after bouncing back from an injury that forced him to miss most of last season. He, along with Schwarzer, were the only Dons to start all 16 contests. Smith scored two goals in conference play and registered three goals and a pair of assists overall. An honorable mention selection each year prior, Smith rounds out his USF career with a fourth consecutive All-WCC nod.
Lombardi was an assist machine for the Dons this year, dishing out a career-high eight overall, five of which came during WCC play, tying for the conference lead. Lombardi also netted a goal against San Diego in the home finale. Altogether, Lombardi's eight assists on the year were the most for a Don since Per Christian Larsen's nine in 1996. Lombardi had previously earned honorable mention honors each of the past two seasons.
Sophomore midfielder
Santiago Digiuseppe made a return appearance on the all-conference honor roll as an honorable mention selection. Digiuseppe contributed a pair of goals and an assist in WCC action. A second-teamer and all-freshman pick last year, Digiuseppe scored three goals and added two assists overall this season.
Rounding out the postseason honors was defender
Matt Orr, who earned a spot on the All-Freshman team. Orr, a converted forward, started in 15 of the team's 16 contests and added a goal against San Diego.
The Dons concluded the season at 7-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in WCC play, which put them in a tie for fifth place.
