It was a night to forget for the Dons as they were swept in straight sets in Santa Clara by the Broncos. In sets one and two Santa Clara (14-11, 5-8 WCC) was able to jump out to early leads and hold on to them with relative ease. The third set was a different story, however.Â
USF was able to hang tight through the beginning of the final set and had the match knotted up at 10. Kills by
Carly Lowry,
Kate Ashman,
Tyna Adamcikova and
Marjolijn Oskam had the Dons cooking and right in the thick of things trailing 21-18. Santa Clara would run away with the end of the set, though, as they reeled off four straight points led by two aces from Kirsten Mead.
Emily Reed and Adamcikova led the attack on the night with eight kills (which was the game-high) and four digs each. Ashman chipped in six kills and a game-high three blocks.
Kim Gutierrez led all players with 15 digs. The freshman duo of
Trish Koutsoukos and
Shannon Levinson combined for 12 and 11 assists respectively.Â
Next up for the Dons (4-22, 0-13 WCC) is another road match, this time in Los Angeles, against Loyola Marymount on Thursday Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. Then USF will head out to Malibu to take on Pepperdine on Saturday Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. The Dons return home on Thursday, Nov. 17 to take on powerhouse BYU at 7 p.m.
