STANFORD, Calif. – The San Francisco track and field team is slated to compete in the first Stanford Twilight meet Friday under the lights at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Runners for 13 schools are competing in the event, representing some of the top distance programs in the country. The meet is highlighting three distances – the 800, 1,500 and 5,000 meters – giving these athletes a spotlight and greater opportunities to earn NCAA and Olympic Trials qualifying times.
For the Dons, steady improvement in the west region descending order lists is again the primary focus.
"We are very much looking forward to getting back on the Stanford track again," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We did well last time out here and the competition this Friday is phenomenal. For some, it is the first time they will be racing in their respective events, and for others, our athletes are just looking to improve on their early season success."
USF will compete in five distances and the javelin at Stanford, with the events to watch coming at the 1,500 and 5,000 meter disciplines. On the men's side of the competition slate, current USF record-holder at the shorter 800 m distance, Hugh Nicklason, will step on the track in heat two of the 1,500. Already familiar with the race venue, Nicklason set his school-best mark in the 800 at the beginning of April at the Stanford Invitational. Edward Shepherd, Mohamed Aziz, and steeplechase record-holder Ryan Driscoll will also compete at the distance vying for improvement in their NCAA qualifying standings.
For the women, a quartet of runners will take to the track in the 5,000 meters. Weronika Pyzik (33rd), Kate Jamboretz (44th), and Daryl Phill (65th) each look to improve on their place on the West Region lists. Charlotte Taylor, a junior from Spalding, England, makes her debut at the distance in her second time on the track this season. In Taylor's other outing, also at Stanford at the Invitational, she raced to the 11th-best 10K time in the nation. USF's duo of Matt Leach and Alex Short take to the track in the nightcap, running in the 5,000 m.
"If the rain holds off conditions should be good, and we are expecting some solid performances," noted Lehman-Winters.
The event is free and open to the public.
