With every piece of concrete knocked out and every patch of new turf laid, progress is being made in the ongoing transformation of USF's athletics facilities. In the thick of a spring and summer of transformation, USF is facing a reshaped facilities landscape.
Currently, USF's classic home of Dons basketball and volleyball, War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, is in the final stages of its first phase helping lay the groundwork for a more extensive renovation project. War Memorial is receiving a new elevator in the southwest corner, a complete overhaul of its bathroom facilities, the replacement of the eastside ventilation units and a seismic retrofitting process that will help bring the entire building up to current codes.
With this first phase expected to be completed in mid-August, the second phase is slated to begin next summer with the construction of a club level with preferred seating on the west side of the facility while relocating the main entrance to the southwest corner across from the University Center. The new club level will include a Sport and Social Change Museum designed to promote core Jesuit values through sports and highlight USF's trailblazing athletic history.
Even further plans call for the construction of a basketball and volleyball practice facility adjacent to War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
The project was made possible by the generous donation of Silicon Valley philanthropist and real estate developer John A. Sobrato and his wife Susan, whose historic gift of $15 million to the University of San Francisco was the largest individual gift in the institution's history.
Significant transformation of USF's athletic campus began with the opening of the renovated Benedetti Diamond in April.
In addition to the work being done at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center this summer, USF's soccer facility, Negoesco Stadium, received a brand new playing surface in June. The new AstroTurf playing surface features a "green" natural infill consisting of a pumice-like material specially formulated for soccer facilities.
The new turf at Negoesco Stadium follows the example of Benedetti Diamond's all-natural organic infill - which is the first of its kind in Division I baseball - and fits USF's vision of leading the way in sustainable athletic facility technology.
Future plans call for the renovation of Negoesco Stadium's seating areas, entranceway and press box.
